Is calling a police officer a "COP" ok?
 

I know that policemen call each other cops, but is it ok for a civilian to call a policeman a cop? Or is it like one black man calling another black man a nigga... but if whitey does it it's bad?

we call them cops around here.

The original name for "Cops" came from "Coppers" and I believe it got it's start in England back when the police would wear the double button front jackets and the buttons were made of Copper so the slang for Police Officer became "Copper" and has since been shortened to just "Cop". I don't think it's really derogatory or anything. Just shortened slang. :)

if he has his pen in had and is writing you a ticket its officer, any other time I call them cop's

There will never be a time when you call him a cop to his face. Only when you talk of other cops does it make sense.

We call them sir or Officer instead of cops.. :winkwink:

The story I heard was that in America, when philadelphia had police footman they did indeed get copper buttons.. Very ritzy and glitzy for those times, and were called "copper buttons", "coppers", "cops".. Maybe a parallel? Or is the copper buttons simply fake?

If cop is a bad word, Cops has been pissing police officers off now for 18 seasons!

Depending on whether you're in trouble or not. I find it that pigs have inflated egos that you can easily use to your advantage by showing them "respect". Besides, it's not like you've got something to prove to them.

No, they don't find it offensive if you call them cops.

I once had an officer named Copps coming to my house to file a report after I got broken into. I was thinking against it but my big mouth got the best of me and I cracked a joke about his name being fit for the job.

He must have heard it a million times already anyways so he just chuckled while filing the report and I'm still a free man.

Just don't call them copper. :)
