Anybody know how to hack this piece of shit Direct Tv DVR?
So Direct TV in all their wisdom has decided to disable the USB ports on the back of ALL their Tivo DVR units.
This would not usually be a concern but for those who use Vonage or other VOIP services, they are not compatible with Tivo units. To help with this, Tivo added USB ports and allows you to connect either a wired or wireless network adapter and download your updates over the Internet. Kind hard to do this though when the idiots over at Direct Tv have the USB ports turned off. I've been searching for an hour or so and all I can find is "Yes, you can hack the Direct Tv DVR's and turn on the USB ports but we can't discuss that kind of stuff here." WELL WERE THE FUCK CAN YOU DISCUSS THIS THEN????? Assholes. :thefinger The Direct Tv Unit is a model number R10, series 2 with software version 6.1 and a service number prefix of 521. I know a bunch of you are self proclaimed "l33t" hackers so let's se what you can do. I'm going out now...Hopefully there will be a solution from the wonderful GFYers whom I love so much, when I return. |

To connect the laptop and the TiVo together for the purposes of TiVoToGo transfers, you'll need:
- A crossover ethernet cable. This differs from a standard ethernet cable, in that several of the wire pairs are swapped, to allow direct transfer from one device to another without a hub or switch. You can pick one up at a store or online (or make your own if you have a crimper, etc). - A wired USB ethernet adapter compatible with TiVo. http://www.tivo.com/adapters/ has a list of adapters that are known to work. However, if you want to connect the TiVo to your DSL connection permanently, you might just want to invest in a broadband router (as cheap as free after rebate at times). To transfer / watch the recordings, you'll need TiVo Desktop 2.1, available at http://www.tivo.com/desktop/. |

taken from the page: The aim of this hack is: Upgrade your TiVo and give it some more recording space (optional). Make your DirecTV TiVo run OS 4.x (including those nice features like folders, HMO, look at pictures, share recordings, etc) This will enable the TiVo's USB ports which we can use the ports for Ethernet connection. Enable FTP/Telnet/TiVoWeb etc, so we can remote control our TiVo. Enable TyTools so we can copy a movie from the TiVo harddisk to our PC, so we can burn our recordings to VCD, SVCD, DVD or DivX. |
However, you can break into the DTiVo box to activate your USB ports and then attach an Ethernet or Wireless adapter. How you ask... well the folks at TiVo were kind enough to use the Linux operating system to run everything. And where there is Linux, there are a ton of Techies trying to give it more power (the sitcom "Home Improvement" comes to mind).

I use to love tivo, then one day my screen goes blue and i get this tivo message.
"Tivo has a serious error, we will attempt to fix this error, please do not touch tivo or change the channel for the next 3 hours" i was like Ha, fuck this shit. changed the channel and my tivo has never worked since, this was 2 months ago, just ended up cancelling it last week when i saw it in the bottom of my closet. |
good fucking luck you can do it you need software called CAKE nad a backup drive and ya have to do all kinds of stupid shit.. or you can buy pre configured drives from a few companies..
