Design Work... Outsource Or In-house?
so do you outsource or do you have in-house designers??
I've been asking around and most companies have in-house deisgners who are always there but some outsource. What are the pros and cons? and what qualities do you look for in a designer/company??? Do you use the same guys all the time?? If not then what does the deisgner/company have to do to get your business??? Your input would be greatly appreciated! :thumbsup |
I have never tried inhouse graphics artists, even though my partner and I have enough sites between us to warrant it.
I prefer to use US based outsourced workers while my partner usually goes with out of country workers, his efficiency is honestly higher than mine, with his work being done as he asks, for cheaper and faster. I actually had some work done for me by one of his outsourced companies just to try it and honestly they nailed the work. BUT Nick Pappageorgio was just as fast, good and well prices if not better than some of the work he is getting cranked out from india (i will rep him without hesistation for the work he did for me) But for the most part outsourced workers from what i have shown tend to hustle for your money much harder than your average free lance designer/programmer and their culture is barter/trade based so they negotiate on every price just to get the work in. Most graphics people I have dealt with either want to tell you what and what you are not going to get in the job you ask for because they know best as an artist while you are just a businessman OR in the case of programmers they do half the work and quit or they delay and delay till you just drop them, the way to get them to do it is to pay way higher than the bid or to contract them and pay them salary. I had a problem with it all untill i learned about macro economics and outsource/insource but i still look for local and american workers and probably always will. the good ones are good and i hold on to them when i find them. Outsource is easier and can be much cheaper in the long run, but you risk the chance of burning through a lot of people to get what you want or getting scammed if it is out of country. Inhouse you have the power to control them through threatening to fire them and you can breath down their neck to keep them on task. Anywone else wanna chime in? |
Depends on the scale of your project. Do you want to launch something innovative? then inhouse better be the plan or else it will only be innovative until you outsource it.

I'd rather say Expierience. How many programs all launch something at the same time. A great innovative idea yet when launch time comes the market is already flooded with the same idea because your out sourced designer tells the rest of his clients about your idea. |
But:
I must add this. There are some great designers on this board that if you made them sign a non disclosure agreement you can get excellent work done. From expierience they are: Machine Gun Kelly Fletch XXX Nick Papagerio <-- however you spell his name (the name is long the work is great) |

Outsource the work! I worked on both sides of this, meaning that I was the guy that received outsourced work and I outsource work to others. The main reason is that it is better to work with guys that really know what they do. And cheaper (sometimes).
The downside is that in like 50% of the cases the guy disspeares and you end up loosing money, it is VERY important to find a reliable source for that... Egomancer |
I say keep it in house as much as you can, but, if there is a particular aspect of what you are trying to create that someone outside may be better suited for, outsource that particular part of the project.
There is no reason why a project needs to be either completely in house or outsourced. :2 cents: |
