Should you drink liquid while eating?

A friend and I are having a debate, and I'm having problems finding information about this in Google today.

The question is, should you drink something while eating food, or should you drink it after you eat? He's saying that you need to chew your food and let the stomach acid start to digest the solids and if you drink liquid it ends up diluting it, making the food harder to digest.

I claim bullshit on that one becuase I think it doesn't matter. Your stomach should produce the right amount of acid and your body will digest it.

Can you imagine eating something, then eating a peanut butter sandwich, and that first thing you ate caused some food poisoning so you're puking up soft server chew shit? Nasty.

I found this article, but I have a hard time believing it especially since it's backing up the claim with Cold or iced drinks may interfere with digestion according to Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

4. Don't wash your food down. Too much liquid with your meals may dilute the digestive juices you need. Try to drink liquid before your meals so you won't feel thirsty during the meal. Cold or iced drinks may interfere with digestion according to Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. A little liquid with the meal may not interfere with digestion and a glass of warm water with lemon juice l/2 hour before a meal may promote secretion of hydrochloric acid.

I drink with every meal and I have no digestion problems. I believe about .0002% of stuff on the internet.

ProjectNaked 12-12-2005 11:29 AM

I thought it said "liquor" :) been at the computer too long...

Maxy 12-12-2005 11:30 AM

I love me some good iced tea with a meal.

EroticySteve 12-12-2005 11:30 AM

If it were that bad it would be public knowledge and research wouldn't be needed.

Babagirls 12-12-2005 11:31 AM

i have to drink water with my meals, ever eat bread without anything to drink? heh :Oh crap

Dirty F 12-12-2005 11:31 AM

I drink a lot during dinner. Its an odd habit of mine. I can easily drink 3 or 4 glasses of water during dinner.

BuggyG 12-12-2005 11:33 AM

ok.. so does that mean we shouldn't be eating soup??
I mean.. it is liquid too

Saeun 12-12-2005 11:49 AM

Should you piss and shit at the same time? Or should you piss standing up, then take a shit?

Really, none of this matters unless you're like 90 years old and in bad health.

Amen.

Nembrionic 12-12-2005 11:56 AM

I usually drink solids during my diner...

Furious_Female 12-12-2005 12:12 PM

I always drink a lot with every meal... it just makes it more enjoyable.

I knew a girl once who had a boyfriend that didn't drink anything until after he ate because he said drinking fills you up too much. I thought it was weird but he's probably right.

Gnat69 12-12-2005 12:17 PM

This is something that I rarely do, I prefer not to drink while eating....

The Heron 12-12-2005 12:20 PM

Tell your friend he is a dumbass and should rid the gene pool of his stupidity.

dready 12-12-2005 12:21 PM

You should drink as little as possible while eating to help your digestion.

I don't drink anything during my meal either. It fills me up, plus it takes away from the taste of the food (in my mind).

The only beverage I will consume during a meal is wine.

Sorry for quoting you out of context here Steve. I know this is from the article and not your quote.. but this is the part that makes it lose all credibility for me. It's like saying "Drink lots of water before you run a marathon and then you won't get thirsty"

Eating always makes me thirsty. I always have a large beverage with every meal.

Couldn't agree with that statement more. Like the man said, if it were that bad it would be known. :2 cents:

I've heard from a few people and different sources that drinking during meals is bad for your digestion. I can't say whether I believe it or not, but I do know that if I drink a lot of water during a meal, my stomach feels a little funny. However, if I happen to have some soda during a meal, I don't feel that way. I think this could be because of the sugar in it so it doesn't dillute the food as well - same with soup, since it has so many other ingredients in it.

Sly 12-12-2005 01:03 PM

Several of you are saying drinking is bad for digestion, while I've heard its good for digestion! Haha. I heard once that you should drink a glass of water with every meal because it helps your body digest better. Though I really have no idea.

Some people also say you should drink a glass of water before eating so you don't eat as much, which is true. So if you're on a diet or would like to drop a few pounds, drink a glass of water before every meal.

fetishblog 12-12-2005 01:04 PM

Now I'm confused. Thanks.

Vitasoy 12-12-2005 01:15 PM

I usually drink after my meal.. never put much thought into it

it is a public knowledge, you shouldn't drink anything during your meals

Drinking while eating is bad because you end up facilitating the fool past your stomach and you end up eating more. I had a gastric operation done and I had to learn all about proper eating :)
it is best to drink 30 minutes before or after you eat. I know it defeats the purpose of eating and drinking but if you have to drink while eating just drink small quantities to moisten dry food.

I have heard people saying you should refrain from drinking while eating. You can drink a whole glass of water after meal but I never really understood why.
