Serious question, need honest opinions!

Been having this debate for a couple weeks now:

Is it possible to chop off a human head in one swing?

Im not talking about your average guy, or your average ebay'd sword. I mean a skilled swordsman with a $3,000 hand crafted katana blade. Please stay yes or no, and any reason supporting your reply.

I for one think it is VERY doable.

Of course it is, given the the sword is sharp enough as well as very heavy. Why not? I can cut the head off of a chicken with a meat cleaver in one chop, so a BIG HEAVY sword on a human would most likely work too....

In fact, now that I think about it I remember watching a movie years ago... Faces of Death or Traces of Death (something like that) and they showed a guy getting his head chopped off with a large sabre. Then they showed it in slow-mo. It was in the Middle East somewhere... unless it was faked footage, I guess it can be done.

ofcourse dude.
i bet it wouldnt take all the shit you are talking about..

i bet i could take an ebay blade and go through your neck in 1 shot

i second that! :thumbsup

Absolutely, especially with a true hand-crafted, forged katana. The only thing that presents any challenge at all for the blade is the spine, which is fairly easily separated. Guilletines and Beheading Axes work the same way, its all a matter of force and momentum.

It's completly plausable. As long as you can sever the spinal cord, it's going to go through like butter.

Battlefield digs in Japan have yielded bodies that were cut nearly in half from the shoulder down through the spine. Not a bad feat considering that it had to go through the armor too.

Plus Japanese soldiers during WW2 had beheading contests on the Chinese that they had captured. They used to each go through something like 40-50 at a time per person.

In my opinion, yes. Good sword, good swing, and a strong wrist to keep it from turning in your hand, it would be no problem.

AC failed to put the point of being in mid air into the arguement. If a body was laying on the ground or on a table, i could see this happening. But if its in mid air and the body does not have any oposite force acting upon it i cant see it happening. Keep in mind there has been no proof in this thread. We need pictures ( not like AC's video game pic) and/or movies to back this up.

i think mythbusters should do this one but in my opinion i think it could be done and i agree that it would take a skilled swordsman and a very well made blade like those of the samurai
