I hate to do this to you guys - drama, but I wish I hadnt :(

So, I bought Chio's blog script, as a lot of you did I paid $70 + for it. I later downloaded it for free as its a GPL script is available to anyone.

I gave him every opportunity to make it right. I ICQed him and told him that maybe his script guy had made a mistake. He told me that this was the case and that he would put it it right.

Of course that was the last I heard.

Im not going to go into any more detail - if you have lost cash then hit me up.

This really is the most upsetting post I have ever made.

by it being a GPL script do you mean they unknowingly or mistakenly distributed it under the GP license? Or that it was a pre-existing script somewhere released under the GPL and changed, then re-sold/re-marketed by Chio ?

You cannot incorporate GPL-covered software in a proprietary system. The goal of the GPL is to grant everyone the freedom to copy, redistribute, understand, and modify a program. The thing is:
Changes to a script with a GPL license may only be sold if the changes are also released as GPL. So if one is selling a GPL script or one based on a GPL script one must give out the source code of the script to anyone who asks. If the source code is not freely available then one can sue the author.
But:
I'm not sure if this is also the case in this situation, cause we likely are not hearing the full story.

You're paying for the compiled binaries and/or RHEL's subscription services. Any GPL application, in order to be licensed under the GPL, MUST... repeat MUST.. freely distribute their source code

Yes this is true. My coder when writing the script for *me* used a couple of the plugins as a basis. Much later when we decided to start selling the script it was completely forgotten about, as the code had so much added, and changed. I did make an announcement after I heard from Damian, and spoke to my coder about it, that we were rewriting the complete script from scratch. I also told damian the same on ICQ. So not sure why he says I haven't said anything.

I have also stated all along the autoblogger was based on scripts I used for wp. The problems I had was they didn't work together. This is why I asked my coder to write a version for me.

I bought Chio's product and think it rocks. Am looking forward to the upgrade, but would be interested in implementing this setup on a few other blogs if I can do it with readily available code.

I'd be willing to bet that AutoBlogger does a bit more and makes it a bit easier...but I'll have to see.
