I just got a nice little JVC that records to a HDD for taking family videos.

It's called the Everio and so far, I'm loving it. Easy to transfer and burn movies to DVD.

Price should fit right into your pricerange. I paid $799, but have seen them for $699.

I've had good luck with Sony over the years. Currently workin' with a digital trv340. In the past I had an 8mm V5 that lasted me over a decade (and I put that cam through hell and back).

Always deal through a store that has a no-hassle return/exchange policy - so if you don't like the unit you bought, you can always swap it for somethin' more suitable.

Inflated 'digital zoom' numbers mean nothing - pay attention only to 'optical zoom'. Don't forget to invest in a good firewire cable. Try talkin' the sales dude into throwin' in a good carrying case on the deal (and a few blank digital tapes).
