Single person who had the most influence on our lives in the last 50 years ?

My personal vote goes too Howard Huges.

Lots of big people came and went during his life, but he stayed on top from almost day 1 !

He invented /designed :

1. The half-cub bra
2. Hollywood as we know it (Hells Angels was the first million dollar film. It cost 3.8 million. He lost 1.2 mill total @ box office)
3. Made aviation what it is today (planes flying over the weather, aerodinamics, jets etc etc),
4. Lots of improvements with hellicopters
5. Made most satellites that are arround the planet right now
6. Made satellite TV avaliable. DirectTV was something he started.
7. TONS of medials advancements
8. Owned half of las vegas after the gangsters started making it corporate. He was probably a big time frontman for the organized crime...

etc etc etc

There was 3 big power in the USA... The organized crime, the CIA and Howard.

They were all tied. He was in the plot to assisinate Fidel Castro (he hired organized crime people to do it actually).

He was also directly involved in the Nixon watergate (his employe was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee)

If we can stretch that "last 50 years" to 78 - I'd go with Philo Farnsworth.

Missy 12-09-2005 11:12 PM

I don't think Howard Hughes was single... but he might as well have been.

I think it's pretty funny how most people don't realize that all Bill Gates did was took advantage of people's stupidity and made fortunes. I guess some of you could be proud of him for that. :disgust

flashfire 12-10-2005 03:52 AM

Tim Berners-Lee who developed the concept of the World Wide Web in 1989 and wrote the code for the first web browser.

The Net has shifted the paradigm for communications on the entire planet.

Bill Gates.

He is the richest man in the world, and also perhaps the most powerful. That's just obvious.

But, if you look at the way he allegedly built and abused his monopoly, by bundling products and stifling competition --he might also be the biggest white collar criminal ever.
