they are not exclusive to the military. the military sells them all the time.

Actually Iran does not have F-16s they have Mirage's (french design and manufacture)

Iran does not have F-16s. They ordered 300 in the mid 70's but the order was cancelled in 1979 before the scheduled arrival of the first two aircraft.

The IIAF did however take delivery of 79 F-14 Tomcats between 1976 and 1978. Seems as though Iran is the only country that's ever gotten Tomcats.

They don't have Mirages (F-1s), either. They have Tomcats (F-14s)

They needed and used the Tomcats to take on Iraq's Mirages.

I remember watching something about that on the history channel once, along with the aircrafts came a US trained support team to keep them repaired. When things went bad with the US and Iran, the US support team sabotaged the planes and left leaving the planes useless.

That and we stopped shipping them supplies so they were pretty much useless once we broke our ties with them.

BTW I think we sold the Dutch some Tomcats as well which they currently still use if I'm not mistaken.

I'm sure some attempted sabotage did go on, but I'm not sure how much.

I know they did have to basically disassemble some of aircraft so they could salvage parts in order to keep some of them in the air before they got to manufacturing replacement parts on their own.


The part of the story that makes me laugh is the two F-16's they nearly took delivery of ended up in Israel.

I stand corrected, it was the F-14 not the F-16. I still find it interesting that you are shocked that Iran has 35 year old cargo planes and not even concerned about their fighters.
