Hillary Clinton promotes law to ban violent video games

U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton has fired another salvo in her battle against violent video games.

On Thursday, she announced draft federal legislation ? expected to go before Congress in mid-December ? that would ban the sale of violent video games to children. Several states are attempting to pass similar laws.

Backed by Senator Joseph Lieberman, another Democrat, she said the draft law also calls for an annual review of the video game rating system.

"I have developed legislation that will empower parents by making sure their kids can't walk into a store and buy a video game that has graphic, violent and pornographic content," she said in a statement.

Children under age 17 would not be able to buy or rent games rated as "M" for Mature or "AO" for Adults Only. Violators of the prohibition would be fined.

The law also recommends a Federal Trade Commission sweep of the game industry to ferret out any hidden content that might undermine those ratings, such as the hidden sexual content in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas discovered earlier this year.

Clinton had denounced game makers and helped prompt an investigation of Rockstar Games, makers of Grand Theft Auto, when news of the sexual content came to light.

kids dont buy the games parents buy them but of course we cant blame the parents.

Libertine 12-03-2005 06:29 PM

She is great at making it really hard not to hate her guts.

Sly 12-03-2005 06:31 PM

She should get Tipper in there to help out. After all, Democrats are totally against censorship in all forms.

Fletch XXX 12-03-2005 06:31 PM

It's typical. Right hates sex, Left hates violence.
Not much fun to be had between them.

WOAH finally someone on this board sees the true colors of the Clinton's! :)

BTW she is also going after the Internet as well. I posted that a few months back and it only got 13 posts. If Bush said the same shit she is saying there would be 300 bashing threads and fear spread by all the attorney's in the industry. But I guess since she is a lib it's okay for her to fuck you over! :disgust

And to think so many people told me to open my eyes! :1orglaugh

Hate the game not the player. Basically what I am saying is stand up for what you believe no matter if it comes out of the mouth of someone you like or dislike! :upsidedow

Actually she has no problem with what adults do , on the other hand the presidents admin that you backed and voted for are starting to go after webmasters. Will you go up to them at the next event and say Hi I voted for the man thats ruining your life?

Video games cost $40-$50 a piece now a days. Kids dont have that kind of money, it's the parents buying them for the kids, and the parents know what's best.

No problem with what adults do? Thats why she's going after the manufactures and sellers of video games? If you don't think she'll go after porn to you got another thing coming.

And, no I'm not a Bush voter, you can save your ideologically blinded response for someone else.

He disagrees with her stance and that automatically makes him a Bush supporter? How old are you? Two?

This thread isn't about Bush or porn. Its about a pretty powerful Senator trying to put age requirements on video games, and the only thing you come up with is "at least she isn't fighting porn!"

No this is what made me say that :
"you can save your ideologically blinded response for someone else."Thats fox pundit talk.Having age requirements on graphic games is not the worse thing in the world. Next are you going to say movies shouldnt have age requirements.Too funny lol

They were $30-50 when I was a kid too and I still bought them. Kids save up their allowance and birthday money to buy games, my brother does it all the time.

Fletch XXX 12-03-2005 07:26 PM

meanwhile in the real world...

some kid just bought cigarettes, another bought somd drugs, a kid down the street just bought some alcohol, and no one can stop it.

i use to buy 40s from liquor store at 14.

Yeah I guess the 175+ billion dollars a year children and teenagers spend does not count.

Lots of kids and teens have either allowances and or jobs. They also have little to no bills whatsoever. It is almost pure entertainment money. As a population segment they are insanely finacially strong spenders.

With those examples each already has laws in place to try to prevent such sales and fines in place for stores that ignore such laws.

What is the big deal anyways. This effects what non adults are allowed to purchase on their own. If they want to play leisure suit larry or something then oh fucking well, better ask ma and pa for it or at least your older sibling.

right, i was just saying - law or no law - they will still sell them to kids.

laws are made to be broken so they say.

Games like movies have ratings on them. Kids cant buy them without parents. And if they are old and responsible enough to have a job then let them shoot some cops in a video GAME.

Yeah I get ya.
They still will be bought and sold, difference is cities and states will now get some extra cash and some poor smucks selling them will get stung by some underage buyer and get a fat ticket.

well not to play devils advocate but if there is anyone to blame its the design studio who put those porn scenes in that game last year or whatever.

that is whats bringing this down on them, ..."including pornography" is no accident.

sucks but thats the facts.

You know, I was kind of wondering about that. I was already under the impression kids couldn't buy M games. I don't know if that is Federal or just something I heard on a local level.

The idea behind the law seems like a "ok" one, I really don't give a shit either way. I just don't see how the law will even change things, I don't think it will. Labels have been on CDs and albums since the 80's and plenty of kids still have those "bad" titles. Its another silly, useless common sense law.

I like having both sex and violence in videogames. :)

The whole debate is a ploy to get press. Politicians in this country are so hard pressed not to get busted for criminal shit they toss in bullshit like this to shake the hounds off their trails.

Video games are such a huge industry they leave Hollywood movies in the fucking dust. Today's movies are just commercials for the DVD and Video game anyway.

Hillary will never get back into the White House. Neither will Rice nor any Republican for a long time. Don't be surprised if an independent pops up all of a sudden and takes the lead.

I use to own a used video game store and I can tell you that a huge percentage of kids get their games that way and even other stuff they aren't supposed to have. Second hand places rarely follow the rules

Who cares, Illinios, California, and a few other states have had their anti-video game laws strucken down in the courts already.
