The thing that bothers me about his case is that the witnesses that convicted him did so for reduced charges. If he were truly guilty he would have a much better chance of commuting his death sentence with admission, apologies and remorse years ago, and he knows that. If any case should "err on the side of life" this would be a good candidate.

It'll send the message that no matter what you do, you will be held accountable for your actions.

I think death sentences are the easy way out for these killers. I think having to spend your entire life in a 5 x 10 prison cell is a harsher punishment and that's what the policy should be.
