Canadians: We're getting a GST cut!

Harper vows to cut GST
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has promised to cut the GST if his party wins the federal election.

Uh huh. Just like every other party leader since the 40s.

StuartD 12-01-2005 11:19 AM

since the 40's?? Didn't the GST get introduced in the 80's? :winkwink:

But yeah, taxes being cut... that's one of the age old promises. And yet, our taxes continue to get higher and higher...

MetaMan 12-01-2005 11:20 AM

nah harper would do it, anything to put less money into the french faggos pockets,

if harper was in power then people in the east would actually have to get jobs.

and that would just be terrible,

i mean the words "frenchmen" and "work" definatley do not go together.

o god heaven forbid all the fishermen out east couldnt just sit and spend welfare cheques for 6 months, o my that would be terrible!

RuthB 12-01-2005 11:21 AM

you should run for Prime Minister Brad :winkwink: you can promise all the underhung Canadian guys some extra inches through fastsize, I have no doubt you'd win! :pimp

Power to the people! :1orglaugh

Yep, my bad. :) I must be thinking of the US federal tax or something. I don't know where I got the 40s from.

is it underhung canadian men or just the loose pussy you failed to mention???

StuartD 12-01-2005 11:24 AM

You can't blame Canadian men for being underhung... it's a cold country!

dready 12-01-2005 11:25 AM

I seem to remember it was a Conservative Gov't that gave us the GST. Liberals got elected because they said they would scrap it. Now Conservatives say the same thing.

These lying fuckers will tell you anything you want to hear to get into power.

Yup, next thing you know they'll be rigging elections! Oh wait, wrong country.

TheLegacy 12-01-2005 11:28 AM

Liberals promised to scrap it back when they took over from the PC's but didnt. what makes anyone think that they will keep their word?

Bryan G 12-01-2005 11:30 AM

Ya I'll believe it when I see it

Mighty Chin 12-01-2005 11:40 AM

Liberals promised to cut it 12 years ago.

Harper says it'll be cut by 1% immediately and another 1% over the next 5 years.

Za Ha 12-01-2005 11:42 AM

This is jus a gimick to get voters. A 1% decrease in the GST will cost the gov't $4,000,000,000 a year, there is no way that spending will increase enough to make that up.

it's cheaper for us to spend a lot once, then for you to spend a little 15 times on numerous referendums :winkwink:

Not to drop a big turd on your statement, but the GST replaced the MST.

To educate everyone who isn't aware, the GST levelled the playing field for Canadian manufacturers (figure out what the M in MST stood for yet?) because the GST was put across import as well as domestic product.

The Liberals ran on a platform of scrapping the GST and then proceeded to assplow the citizens for 12 years.

The last part of your statement is true though.

Cutting GST by 2 points isn't really worth it to me to vote for the right wing fuckwad. It's a tax that should have been abolished years ago. Besides, we'll just pay for it somewhere else. You know, like the gas tax that should have been gone years and years ago that we're still paying for...the options for the government are brutal.

you think the west wants to spend money on keeping quebec here?
you're sadly mistaken.

the fact of a singular quebec nation is indeed hilarious, have fun building your own currency and getting foreign investments.

truly funny.

This is true, but the outcome was inflation. The tax burden once paid by the manufacturers and incorporated in prices was downloaded to the consumer, it made the tax transparent. I wouldnt have a problem with a do-all tax like the GST if there were no income tax - in fact I would have no problem paying 20% sales tax if there were no income tax. Its the way the government double-dips on taxes that kills me... they tax my after tax dollars... gasoline is the worst.. I use my after-tax dollars to buy gasonline that is taxed once and then re-taxed by the GST on top of the tax!!! aaarrrrrgh.

Governments need to make up their minds - either let me keep ALL of the money that I earn and tax me on my consumption OR tax my income and dont make me pay variable taxes on pruchases.

I agree. I am still waiting for the day when the west can vote Quebec OUT of Canada.

WiredGuy 12-01-2005 12:14 PM

I'll probably get killed by every canadian for saying this, but I don't want a GST cut. I'd much rather they knocked off a percentage off income taxes than sales taxes. As a Canadian company with no canadian customers, I'm GST exempt from the business side so this doesn't do anything for my business. Sure it'll save me a couple hundred bucks a year on my personal side, but it isn't that great an incentive.

income tax is another one of those "temporary" taxes... supposed to be used just for the war and then removed.

I tell ya, that war must have cost a lot!

Bastone 12-01-2005 12:35 PM

The conservatives will never make it to power!!! As far as i'm concerned, it's a useless election which will have the same results as the last one! A big waste of tax payers' money!!! I guess it could be worst, at least we don't have W as our leader!

Welfare and unemployment are supposed to be "temporary" too.

I fucking hate quebecers with all my heart. And i'm a frenchie which is even worse. Most quebecers are bitchy jealous pricks always asking for more without putting any effort. No wonder it's the most unionized part of north america. I wish Quebec would separate and leave Montreal in Canada.

I'm all for partition, leave those losers in their shitty little villages i don't care. Just keep Hull's region and most of montreal, we all know they're not the bulk of the separatists anyway.

Mr. Soul 12-01-2005 03:24 PM

Wow, a 2% GST cut in exchange for our health care system, social programs, and our standing in the world when Harper gets us in to the neo-cons next war. Great deal!

Jack Layton should come out with a radical platform to nationalize our energy industry, and completely getting rid of income tax and GST. He'd win by a landslide and our country's economy would experience unprecedented growth.

I'm born and raised Canadian and I have ZERO problem with Quebec, never have, never will. Yes, there's that ongoing Canadiens/Maple Leafs rivalry and that whole seperation issue, but I am very glad we have Quebec - at the very least, it adds a little culture to a country with almost none.

And, hey, how many of us Canucks when we were in college drooled over a weekend trip to Quebec City or Montreal? I rest my case.
