Putting different item in an exchange box

My friend was thinking my digital camera is getting 1 year old now and he was looking to get a new one so he could give it as a christmas present but was thinking of this idea for a quick exchange, what he was going to do is go to future shop (retail shop in canada like best buy) and purchase a new camera that looks just like the one he has then a few days later put the old camera in the new box and claim he was going to give it as a gift but the person already had one and then get a refund with the old camera in the box and he would have a new camera. The company has a 30 day return policy.

Now what he is wondering would this work? (have you tried something like this and what was the outcome?) Also what would be the best payment method? If he used his debit card is there anyway it could come back to him?

Yea hes not the most moral person but do you think his plan will work? I know someone who did something similar 2 years ago with some shoes and it worked but would it be different with a camera?

I know someone that did that with a coffee maker and got away with it but a camera is a different story. My advice would be don't try it. That is fraud and if your friend is caught he could get some prison time or at the very least a heavy fine.
