alloy wheels/rubber for winter vs steel wheels/rubber

i've never really considered changing up my all season tires for winter tires on any winter vehicle i've owned, until now. the tires on my new Saab are basically full-on summer performance tires - i had a breath-taking drive up to the mountains yesterday evening (snow and ice, tires had fuck-all grip).

i know many people buy steel wheels/winter rubber, and then switch back to their alloys/summer rubber once the snow is gone. the thing is, i don't plan on driving this car much except in the winters, so i'm wondering if i can't just put winter tires on the 17 inch rims that came with the car... any thoughts?

thanks much :glugglug

Of course you can. You are talking about studded tires...I assume.

Are tire studs legal in your area?

They are basically little metal rods. They go into the little holes along the surface of your tire. Much cheaper than buying new tires (and less of a hassle).
