SEO description tag

Anyone know if description tag is used by google. Since keyword tag is officialy not used by google.

baddog 12-01-2005 12:25 AM

Well, it is better to have those things (both keyword and description) than not as there are other SE's out there and you never know when Google is going to change their mind.

JMHO, of course.

Exactly... I do a lot of blackhat shit myself so I get sandboxed by Google all the time... But I make a ton of money on the other search engines because I don't just target Google.

There is also a group of people who think Google DOES use them like this:

The Big Picture:
:--------------------------------------------------------------------:
No tags=
:--------------------------------------------------------------------:
Tags with bullshit that doesn't match page content:
:------------------------------------------:
Tags that do match page content:
:----------------------------------------------------------------------:

So you supposedly do get a break for having the right ones, it just doesn't do much for you and they are not used in the SERP's. But in an industry where the difference between page 5 and page 1 can mean those extra two - , wouldn't you just use em anyway?

It is used by Google when there isnt enough on page content to provide a "snippet" for the listing in the results - so its best to write a good description that will pull in the searchers. Add that to the other SEs that do use it and kinda makes it a standard item you shouldnt be without

So meta may not be totally dead.

Thanks for your answer.

skillfull 12-01-2005 11:12 AM

yes it is used by Google

ssp 12-01-2005 11:17 AM

Meta isn't dead at all. You just have to know what you are doing.

pornguy 12-01-2005 11:20 AM

Yeah. What they said.

thanks for a good response.

Not having a description tag make me able to see when google update my site listing. I may keep it that way on my new blog to see what happen.

Then again it may be a total failure.
