Artistically creative people, as well as those who are reckless, violent or impulsive, have more sexual partners than the rest of us, report Bloomberg News and Reuters of new research from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Open University in Britain. Yes, someone actually got paid to figure this out.

Some 425 British adults were surveyed in a way that linked their artistic output and reckless behavior to their mating success. Specifically, they were tested for personality traits that are commonly found in schizophrenics. Earlier research has shown that artists and schizophrenics score equally high on measurements of recklessness and "magical thinking," reports Bloomberg. The point of the study was to show that traits society views as negative can be channeled into creative activity instead of succumbing to schizophrenia. Specifically, artists and poets had on average four to 10 sexual partners, compared to the average of three for the rest of the population.

"We found it in both the men and women, which was quite a surprise to us," lead study author Daniel Nettle told Reuters. "It could be that very creative types lead a bohemian lifestyle and tend to act more on sexual impulses and opportunities, often purely for experience's sake, than the average person would." So if this makes you want to take up a paintbrush in the hopes of an enhanced love life, hold on. Professional artists had far better mating success over amateurs. In addition, those who are impulsive and exhibit violent behavior had more sexual partners, regardless of their level of creativity. The study findings were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.
