old "friends" calling you

God damn idiot that I haven't spoken with in 4 years calls me tonight. It's not a guy that I particularly like, I guess that after not calling for 4 years, he would have understood the hint.

But no, he calls me like we where out for beers yesterday.

He was boring.

I saw him coming.

He was calling to pitch me Quixtar A.K.A. Amway.

Why oh why do they call people who don't like them out of the blue like that? Why they call their functions "family reunions"? I'm not his family, the people going there certainly are not my family. So how is it a fucking family reunion?

His answer was "uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

I hung up and made note of his number so if he calls again, I'll either not answer or fuck with his mind.

Those fuckers always harass me at Barnes & Noble. It never fails. I love telling them that I make my money in porn and taking video and pics of naked girls...lol

A few years back I got a call from an old "friend" I hadn't seen in about 3-4 years. I had moved and we were never close, just had hung out a few times. So he tells me he just saw something that had reminded him of me and decided to give me a call. He comes out to my house and hangs out for a couple of hours and we shoot the shit and have a beer and it's all cool. Then about two weeks later I start bouncing checks and getting calls from places about bounced checks that I had never heard of. Turns out the fucker had grabbed a couple of checks out of my check book when I was in the bathroom, had new checks printed and was writing them all over town. He also used my identity to open up a bunch of credit accounts in stores all over the place.

To make a long story short he really fucked me over. In the end the police caught him and he is doing a little bit of time. But he had outstanding batter warrents so they got him on those too. So he has two strikes against him. When he gets out, if he does it again he's going away for a long time. It took me about 2 years to get the whole mess cleared up and there is still some shit I'm dealing with now.

In short I learned a valuable lesson. Everyone should buy themselves a small lockbox or safe. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just be able to withstand fire. Lock up all your sesative stuff in there like passports, car titles check books anything like that because you never know when a "friend" may drop by, see it laying around and snag it.

eguy 11-29-2005 02:40 AM

whoa, thats pretty fucked up!

blazin 11-29-2005 04:35 AM

Damn Kane... that's fucked!

SilentKnight 11-29-2005 08:21 AM

Speakin' of Amway - what is it with Amway and religious freaks? Seems like every devious Amway rep I've unfortunately crossed paths with over the years had a parallel religious complex.

Is it just another indicator how easily these fools are duped?

djroof 11-29-2005 09:08 AM

omg Kane!!!

sickkittens 11-29-2005 09:09 AM

You should have told him that you want him to "find Jesus" and that you had some books to sell him.

HDADULT 11-29-2005 09:18 AM

Amway is still around? unbelievable! amazing how network marketing schemes can brainwash some people and makes them pitch thier friends.

I have even a better story. When I was a small kid my father and his friend (both cops) were having a drink at our house, when a 'friend' dropped by and my father invited him in. At some point the dude excuses himself to go to the bathroom, and 5-6 minutes later my father gets suspicious because this guy is taking too long, so he goes and checks out the bathroom - there's nobody there. Then he enetrs another room at the very same moment when this guy's putting my father's gun in his pocket.....

Back then it was up to 7 years in jail if a cop loses his gun because of negligence.

I love their tactics to start conversation. It's sometimes more painful to watch than a socially awkward guy trying to pick up a girl at the bar.

I was at Lowe's picking up a door hinge when from halfway down the aisle some guy looks right at me and says, "Mike? Mike?"

I ignored him, kind of thought he was just a local crazy. He then came up and said, "Mike, didn't you hear me?"

I go, "Umm, it's cause I'm not Mike. But i know how this dialogue goes. This is where you say, 'Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were a friend of my brother's from high school' That's where I correct you and give you my name, which obviously you don't know because this is how you market your "Booming Internet Business". Let me guess your business has been growing by leaps and bounds and you're not confined to working a 9 to 5 business and now you have lots of time for your family and all of the money you'd ever imagined right? You also want me to come to an informational meeting where you will pitch me and have other seemingly successful business owners there?"

The guy looked at me with a blank stare on his face. I took all the wind out of his sails. I saw him leave the store.

I felt bad for a minute, I did mean to call him out but I expected he'd be witty and exchange some mindless banter as I shopped for a hinge.

Just as I was about to feel bad I thought to myself wait, their pitches are always the same, it's almost as if they were scripted. If someone had a successful business then why are they recruiting at 8:00pm on a Wednesday night at a Home Improvement store?

Funny.

Years ago before the web I remember when they would use BBSes to recruit.
