Anybody watch MTV-X?

I just got hooked up with MTV-X a few weeks back and although I'm stoked to see alot of my favorite oldschool metal on there, I'm really laughing at all of these new bands I'm seeing. They basically have 4 guys, all in t-shirts and shirts, the lead singer is this serious kid with bad hair, inevitably one of the guitarists will be wearing a skullcap and a somber look thru the whole song. They all sound the same, the same, the same...all formula crap.

On a positive note I saw a repeat of RATM on SNL the other day and it restored my faith in humanity. :thumbsup

Nz

Am I watching too much tV?

Slick 03-24-2002 12:32 PM

Hey man, MTVX KICKS ASS !!! I watch it a lot. I've had it for a while. It's nice seeing some old-school metal videos on there. I know what you mean about bands that all sound the same, BUT I'll tell ya what though, I absolutely LOVE the new style that's taking over. REAL heavy metal has been on the back burner for a long time now here in the U.S., but "today's sound" is starting to get edgier and edgier and hopefully sooner or later, metal will be back in full throttle :)

JackFoley 03-24-2002 12:37 PM

A lot of the new metal bands are just as commercialized, formulated, and forgettable as the pop acts playing on the original MTV. I do like MTV2, though.

Fletch XXX 03-24-2002 12:41 PM

Fuck TV period.

MTV is like anything, it WAS cool, now everyone is doin it. Television, as an invention, and a tool of commercialism has worn off.

But my girlfriend puts MTVx on, I love the old videos.

[Labret] 03-24-2002 12:46 PM

Metal never left. It just wasnt trendy enough for MTV for the last 10 years.

I personally hate all this numetal crap you see on MTVX. Its all pop metal. Cmon, Linkin Park? Its basically an edgy boy band. Creed? Power ballad soft metal for 40 year olds. Slipknot / Sevendust / Mudvayne. Fucking circus acts. Blend a little metal with some breakdowns stolen from the last 15 years of hardcore, and you get that shit. This kind of horrible metal shit did not exist 3 or 4 years ago. Why? Wasnt trendy. Remember when Skacore was big for awhile? Hair metal? Its all trendy shit, the flavor of this year is rapcore numetal I wanna be gimp bizkit faggoty ass cunt rock.

BUT good metal still exists, always has and always will.

Lately, for some odd reason, I been getting into the European Black metals scene. Black metal dont sound the same as it did 5 years ago. Some of this shit is just sick. Lately I been listening to alot of Cradle of Filth, Dominion Caligula, Insomnium, Year of Our Lord, Aborym, Alghazanth, In Ruins. And all the old hardcore standbys like Cold as Life, Hatebreed, Blood For Blood, Redemtpion 87. All of it amazing, and shares on thing in common, it will never be poppy enough for mtv... 16 year old girls wont think it "kicks ass".

That is the true test of metal/hardcore. If a 16 year old at Hot Topic is loving it, its pure unadulterated shit. Metal was not meant to be pretty, and was not meant to be popular.

Like punk on mtv. How fucking punk is it to be on MTV? I remember when punk used to mean you were a dirty stinky outcast. Now you can call yourself punk and be all over teenage girls walls coast to coast.

If it hits mtv it is no longer metal, nor is it no longer punk. Its TOP 40.

TOP fucking 40.

Turboface 03-24-2002 01:17 PM

I'll have MTVX on while working away on my computer sometimes, but it is distracting sometimes. A cool video will come on and I'll find myself wandering into the next room to see the tv better. It's better than having a movie or tv show on - they can pull you away from your work for longer peroids of time.

I prefer MTVX over MTV or any of the other MTVs I have on my cable service. But - there is a reason to watch MTV now - There's a show called The Osbournes - This new reality show follows the Godfather of Metal, Ozzy Osbourne, through what goes on behind the doors of his house - and it's not what you'd expect. I'd recommend this show to anyone, whether you like Ozzy or not. It's hillarious.

[Labret] 03-24-2002 01:23 PM

I like Ozzy, but after I watch that show, I want to strangle his ugly children. What a couple lame asses those two are. They do not deserve Ozzy as their father.

Slick 03-24-2002 01:36 PM

[Labret], I never felt closer to ya than I do now, ha ha ha. It's very hard to find true metal fans around here. I'm not as much into the death/black metal as I used to be, but I still like bands like Cradle Of Filth, Deicide, Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, and a few others. I've been stuck in a power metal niche for a while now, bands like Gamma Ray, Iced Earth, Primal Fear, Iron Savior, Stratovarius, Helloween, plus a bunch of others are what I've been into lately.

I love the oldschool bands from the late 80s, that was when all of the great music came out. Nowadays, there's too much shit out there, clogging up the US market. Fuck, in other countries like Germany, metal still reigns. Over here in the states, they just don't know what good music is.

Ha ha ha, I also agree with you 100% on that matter. Those kids are morons. You'd think that having Ozzy as a father, that the kids would be cooler than that.

Amen. 84 to 89 was the heyday of metal.

You said Helloween, now I have to go track down Keeper of the Seven Keys part 1. Thats a classic I used to play so much the tape was just unplayable after awhile.

tapes... those were the days. Tape trading home made metal comps were the best.

So true, I would say half of the music I listen to these days is either German or Dutch in origin. I dont know what they feed those kids, but they make the sickest metal and hardcore coming out these days.

I have the domain www.mtvx.com and was wondering where I was getting all of the traffic from anybody have any ideas on how I can cash in on this without any legal problems ?

SykkBoy 03-24-2002 05:26 PM

I'm with Slick and [Labret] on this one...although I do admit a softspot for MudVayne ;)))

I really love the grindcore stuff coming out of England and Florida: Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Godflesh, Morbid Angel, Deicide, etc. Beyond the Exorcist style growling, there is some interesting musiciansship going on...and that's what I loved about the 80's underground metal (and even some of the poppy hair stuff) they were actually musicians who could play instruments (admittedly some to a lesserdegree than others). And call it cock rock or whatever, but I broke out some Motley Crue "Shout At The Devil" and it still sounds as fresh as ever and dynamic....I so hated the early 90's and these grunge guys with their mopey bullshit posturing...

that said...haven't cuaght MTV-X yet.....

That is a great great album. My favorite though is Too Fast For Love. I was around 8th grade when Shout At The Devil came out... blew my little mind.

I used to listen to a little hair metal back in the day, I think everyone did. Kix, Cinderella, LA Guns, Killer Dwarves, D.A.D., Faster Pussycat. Pains me to admit it.

SykkBoy 03-24-2002 05:50 PM

holy shit...someone else who remembers D.A.D.???
of course it would be [Labret] ;)))

I'm working on a little screenplay for an ultra-low budget movie called "Rim Of Hell" and working with them on licensing out their song "Rim Of Hell" for the movie (shouldn't cost much, since they haven't done much stateside lately)

damn, gonna have to hit audio galaxy and grab a couple more DAD sings...still find myself humming "they throw the best damn parties at the rim of hell, you can tell by the smell, they throw the best damn parties at the rim of hell"
;)))

[Labret] 03-24-2002 05:57 PM

That is one of the most under rated albums of all time.

My personal fave is Sleeping My Day Away. The entire album is great.

yeah "No Fuel For The Pilgrims" was an excellent album "Sleeping My Day Away", "Rim Of Hell", "Siamese Twin", "Jihad", "Overmuch" great songs....

highly underrated and the lyrics were much darker than the average hair band...it's weird that a band that looked like they were having fun were singing such twisted lyrics....

Living For Today 03-24-2002 09:30 PM

You are all to fucken cool. I wish I could be old school and listen to shithouse black metal bullshit :1orglaugh fuckers :321GFY

Slick 03-24-2002 09:39 PM

Damn guys, I now feel connected to all of you in a new way, he he he. I used to LOVE that D.A.D. song "Sleeping My Day Away". I'll never forget that guitar melody for that, I can hear it in my head right now, he he.

Killer Dwarfs kicked ass. I still remember their first videos for "Keep The Spirit Alive" when the lead singer was in the box, ha ha ha. Then their "Stand Tall" video where they make their records, shrink wrapping them and putting them in the microwave, classic stuff, ha ha ha.

Hell, I was just listening to the first L.A. Guns cd in my van just about a week and a half ago. I have the video that they put out shortly after the cd was released, it has a few vids from the cd.

Geez, this is like a stroll down memory lane, ha ha ha. Faster Pussycat had a couple of great albums to. "Bathroom Wall" was a classic tune. I can't think of that one tune on there that starts of PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY CAT (if I remember it right). I'll have to dig up the cd around here, he he he.

Do any of you remember Pretty Maids ?? I remember being blown away by their "Future World" song/video. That kicked me in the balls. I was hooked on that for a long time.

I've managed to pick up a nice collection of old-school stuff on cd, Ebay is a wonderful thing, ha ha ha. Do you guys remember Keel ?? WOW, what a fucking great band.

I have all kinds of stuff that some of you probably never heard of like Cold Sweat, Crimson Glory, Manowar, Wildside, Junkyard, Dirty Blonde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Nitro, Autograph, Tuff, Fifth Angel, Bonfire, Shark Island, Melidian, fuck, I could go on and on all night.

Yeah, it's nice seeing other countries like Germany still pumping out the metal. Fuck, bands like Helloween, Pretty Maids and Savatage are still kicking major ass over there. Sure, you can get their cds over here, but their not very well known. Over there, they're legends.

Oh yeah, I wish that I could go back in time to enjoy those days all over again. That's when life was good, he he he.

[Labret] 03-24-2002 10:05 PM

AHAHAH I am laughing my ass off. Yeah, I know every single band you mention. May not have been a big fan of some of it, but I remember it all quite well. ahahah damn. Some of these old washed up bastards are touring again. The promo shots for the bands like warrant touring right now are fucking hilarious.

Remember when MTV had a segment called the "Hard 30" or some shit in the afternoon that played just bad metal videos? And of course headbangers ball. My dream back then was to have a lifetime subscription to Metal Edge Maganzine.

ADIDAS 03-24-2002 11:27 PM

FYI Slayer is headed here to San Diego April 30!

Gotta see em!

hmmm, I may have to take a little trip out to San Diego...
I saw them in Vegas a couple months ago and for a band who has been around for 20 years, they still play with 10 times the enthusiasm as any of these "nu metal" bands today...

I remember one of the roughest pits I was in was a Slayer pit in '95...nazi bastards with their doc martens throwing elbows and MTV headbangers getting tossed around like ragdolls, my wife in the stands 6 month pregnant and I took one of the hardest shots I ever took in my life and threeway smash that knocked the wind out of me, so I'm like a bitch on the floor trying to catch my breath and getting stepped on...I got up all bloodied and kept at it....what a night....not as bad as the losing my shoe incident at a Suicidal Tendencies show though.....

HeadPimp 03-25-2002 01:07 AM

MTV X is the only thing decent to come out of MTV in years! Pretty sad when you are a music TV station and you have to start spawning more channels just so you have some air time to actually play a video. Much music can be cool too, along with BET's videos.

Ha ha ha, I remember the days of "Hard 30". That's the first time that I heard Europe "The Final Countdown". Wow, what a song when it first came out. I loved the "Headbanger's Ball", that was my show. I recorded a shitload of videos off of there. I have like 10 tapes around here of videos. I think that they're buried up in the attic. I know that my bro borrowed a couple and never returned them, which sucks, I lived for the ball.

The thing that really pisses me off is that after Adam Curry left the ball and Rikki Rackman took over, I thought that he was "The Man". Well, a few months ago, when MTV had their anniversary, they showed Rikki and were talking about the ball. He was knocking all of the hair bands that were on the show, like he pretended to like them, that was a slap in the face for me, he he he.

Slick 03-25-2002 01:08 PM

If you wanna hear something really cool. Go to Morpheus and download Tuff - American Hair Band. It's based on Kid Rock's American Bad Ass. It's a classic tune that they put in a bunch of 80's band names and song titles, very good. I ended up buying the cd, he he he.

SykkBoy 03-25-2002 01:34 PM

http://www.metalsludge.com/ :))

yeah, Rikki Rachtman was a cock....
his band Battery Club sucked dick....

but I liked getting to watch the three whole hardcore videos every week when they started Frantic Fringe...they even played Napalm Death's "Mass Appeal Madness" once......
