I was never under fire, but I know David From Perfect Gonzo has been many times, here is one pic i remember him posting.

sonofsam 11-27-2005 06:43 PM

taken live fire, but to this day i'm not even sure if the guy was actually trying to hit us, or just wanting to act like a gangster

scarey sound though hearing the swirl of a bullet cut through the wind

Doctor Dre 11-27-2005 06:51 PM

There were these really large beetles that could hardly fly at all and when they wanted to land they just STOPPED FLYING in midair and they would hit the ground and it sounded like a mercedes benz taillight lens hitting the ground. For weeks after I got back to America, all I could hear was that sickening sound and Martin Sheen's Voice saying "I asked for a mission, and for my sins they gave me one..."

Does that count?

mrthumbs 11-27-2005 07:03 PM

It was so bad that lensman himself banned the troll attacking me.

datatank 11-27-2005 07:04 PM

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 11-27-2005 07:13 PM

Does living in LA Count?

Kidding aside, I was in the Military but was never in a "Combat Zone".
Guys that went through such a thing I have always admired.

Why?

Someone explain this to me.

Why is it so heroic or respectable to be a moron putting yourself in a situation
where bullets and bombs have a higher chance of hitting you than playing russian roulette?

For what did you RISK your lives?
To defend your country? Get the fuck out of here.

Nobody put a gun to your head forcing you to risk your life and be a 'hero'
there are ways out. What if you chose that path? Are you not man enough then?

Unless theres a direct threat to your country (as in people invading your country or a hostile country making plans doing just that) theres no reason for you to be out there catching bullets. M<akes you plain stupid.

Because they *usually* believe in what they are fighting for. So it doesn't necessarily make them a moron to fighting for what they believe.

MikeVega 11-27-2005 07:30 PM

I had a girlfriend hit me with and alarm clock and a beer bottle ... does that count ... :1orglaugh

but no ..never in the army

You are right.. doesnt make you a moron. Dumb should be the right word.

Im not sure if lack of education is at fault here but all conflicts of the last 50 years EXCLUSIVELY wasted american lives..No.. waisted lives. We havent brought any liberation or peace with our conflicts anywhere so its all waste of flesh and young guys participating and being proud of it.

KingK7 11-27-2005 07:34 PM

I was shot down over Hanoi in 69

mrthumbs 11-27-2005 07:34 PM

Dont get me wrong tho: id be scared shitless in ANY hostile environment.. You dont need bullets and bombs to get me killed over there. Im a coward but in this scenario that doesnt get me embarrassed.

Have you seen the movie Collateral? In the end he dies sitting on the train and no one will notice him. Thats what happens if everyone just care about themself.
Now, if this is innocent people dying, especially children, and you want to help them...does'nt that make sense? Sure there are lots of propaganda and lowlife wars because of oil and shit, but there are also wars like the one on Balkan. It was not in my backyard, but I could not ignore it either, so I served 6 months there. Sure it involved a risk and you can call that stupid if you want to. But in the end we all gonna die sometime and somehow, and I rather prefer dying "stupid" than as the coward that made no difference....

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 11-27-2005 08:31 PM

Bottom line, if it were not for those willing to die for there country and fight for it none of us would even be here.

seeric 11-27-2005 08:49 PM

So sorry to hear about your father, A1R3K. :(

theking 11-27-2005 09:03 PM

I have been engaged in three different operations...including the 1st Gulf War...which ended my career.

Rob 11-27-2005 09:06 PM

I was in Kosovo and we got into a pretty mean firefight with some Serbians.

I was with the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron (Combat Controllers) and we dropped in at about 1800 hours on a Wednesday night. We went in before the "real" fighting began to light up some key targets and ran into a pretty pissed off pack of skinnies. We were a tight 12 and they tried to overrun our position. My squad leader was counting them down but stopped couting at 150. The only thing that saved our ass was Puff (AC-47) called down to our position.

The craziest part is that I don't remember any of it. I just recall bits and pieces when people ask but all in all...I don't remember any of it. It went by so fast and I think it's my mind's way of repressing bad thoughts by not remembering it.

Actually four different operations but only three involved fire fights.

pornguy 11-27-2005 09:10 PM

* years playing in other countries, and I never got close enough for them to shoot back..

It's a hell of a thing using a 50cal sniper rifle.

:thumbsup I too have been there...done that.

Diego 11-27-2005 09:16 PM

I grew up a military brat. Dad was in Viet Nam. I know he worked on radio towers there and have heard stories of him "swatting at the bees" while 70 feet in the air..only to realize within seconds that they were bullets.

I was over at my neighbors house when I was 5 years old when someone came to the door to inform them that their husband/father of 6 kids had been shot down and killed. This was my first experience with "death".

Married an ex-military man.

Diego 11-27-2005 09:49 PM

Damn, A1R3K is gone now. I wonder if this is the anniversary when he lost his father. :( Seems such a different thread for him to make. Anyway, if this be the case....A1R3K...he fathered one helluva son.

I am thankful for him and his service to this country.

Zuzana Designs 11-27-2005 09:53 PM

I was in the army for 2 years as a MP but no kills

reed_4 11-27-2005 10:20 PM

I've never been in combat but hoping to join them in the future and yeah I have taken live fire.

Brent_Moe 11-28-2005 01:14 AM

I never even tried carrying long guns. The only time I fired a gun was when I went out with my friends on a target shooting event.

media 11-28-2005 01:18 AM

I've never been in combat, but I've been in live fire... One time was on the railroad tracks near the Oakland colliseum, on halloween, about three gang bangers were firing their guns at us.. I heard bullets wiz past my head as I was running like I'd never run from anything before.. Glad it was night time and they could not get a good aim on us..

Mr Pheer 11-28-2005 01:25 AM

I saw action in Somalia and 1 very short fight in Haiti.

MikeyFingaz 11-28-2005 01:47 AM

I know the sound of bullets whizzing past me... i know the sound of me about to shit my pants... i have not been in the military... and piss on anyone who doesnt respect our armed forces... people join the military out of a sense of patriotism, and a want to help others... yes our government uses the troops for the wrong reasons all too often, but you CAN have dismay for your govenrment, and STILL support the troops...

support the troops, not the war.... oh, and btw, if you have no respect for the poeple in our military, then get the fuck outta my country.

We currently live in a fictual "war" economy... so fighting for your country right now DOES help.
