I read once that something like 40% of lottery winners file for bankruptcy within ten years.

Guess they can't just handle the money.

SilentKnight 11-27-2005 08:21 AM

She lived in a geodesic home and made corrugated cardboard boxes for a living.

Who was she married to...Dr. Seuss?

Ive never had much money and been close to declaring bankruptcy once, but man would it be fun to see how well (or badly) I could do with 60 million dollars or whatever it was they won .

manne 11-27-2005 09:46 AM

Babagirls 11-27-2005 09:48 AM

lesson be learned: spend spend spend!!!!!! (when ya win big on the lottery) before you die.

pornguy 11-27-2005 09:49 AM

Not that they can not handle the money, that they dont think ahead. they get this really great income, they buy a big house. An expensive car, they travel, and then tax season hits. At first no problem, but they spend more and more, and tax season keeps comming.

Hmmm sounds like some others that I know.

And then one day, that source of income is gone.

Holly 11-27-2005 10:06 AM

More money, more problems.

Tala 11-27-2005 10:11 AM

Ouch.

When winning the lottery, buy the things you like, but INVEST like a madman. Keep the money coming in so that when tax season hits, you'll be able to pay it and just roll along.

Investing... That's a hard concept for many Americans.

Consumerism kills.

In other words, they don't know how to handle that much money.

Most people don't, actually. They have no clue. They long to win it, but when they do they turn into "rich idiots".

A guy here in Winnipeg won over $8 million on the 6/49 back in the late 90's. He bought all his so-called friends brand-new 4x4's, had himself a big new house built, spent money like a feind.

Last year he was found dead, death by suicide.

He died broke.

solution: have a decent accountant/investment advisor. I have one, now I just need to win that lotto. :D

Silent_Thunder 11-27-2005 11:12 AM

How to handle the money that you didn't deserve?
I feel great when I spend MY money. It can be a little sum, but it feels great to know that you deserved what you have.

Money is nothing. Success is everything.

lol, so true

Spunky 11-27-2005 12:38 PM

I hear that story all the time about people just blowing their roll and winding up worse off than before the winnings..too bad but I guess I would do the same thing

Morgan 11-27-2005 12:39 PM

what problems?

Dagwolf 11-27-2005 12:44 PM

I could handle it. My dreams are smallish.

Bama 11-27-2005 01:03 PM

Sounds like they were trailer park trash before winning the lottery and since morals and honor can't be purchased - they remained trailer park trash.

And fyi - lump sum'ers only have 1 big tax season to deal with - the one following the winning. After that, their only tax responsibility is the interest from any investments/dividends the original money earned.

Vitasoy 11-27-2005 01:21 PM

Most people can't handle that much money all of the sudden

PixeLs 11-27-2005 07:15 PM

Money is the root of all evil.

money acquired at no sweat, is spent easily.
I agree, less money, less problems.

Brent_Moe 11-28-2005 12:46 AM

It's just sad to know that the money she thought would make her life better turned out to be the cause of her death.

Th!nk 11-28-2005 10:55 AM

a sad story indeed. maybe she was really had been wanting it but sad to know that it was the cause of her death.

Adultnet 11-28-2005 10:59 AM

Drake 11-28-2005 12:10 PM
