LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Actor Pat Morita, whose portrayal of the wise and dry-witted Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid" earned him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 73.

Morita died Thursday at his home in Las Vegas of natural causes, said his wife of 12 years, Evelyn. She said in a statement that her husband, who first rose to fame with a role on "Happy Days," had "dedicated his entire life to acting and comedy."

In 1984, he appeared in the role that would define his career and spawn countless affectionate imitations. As Kesuke Miyagi, the mentor to Ralph Macchio's "Daniel-san," he taught karate while trying to catch flies with chopsticks and offering such advice as "wax on, wax off" to guide Daniel through chores to improve his skills.

I thought he was excellent in Karate Kid. Remember when Daniel hurts his leg at the competition and Mr. Myagi gives him a happy ending to help him continue? He wasn't warming up him hands for his knee now! :1orglaugh

Pat Morita was a gifted actor. The first role I recall him in was "Farewell to Manzanar", about the WWII internment camps (Morita himself was forced to live in a camp as a youth during the war).

I may be the only person posting here who never saw any of the Karate Kid movies. I did however see Morita in a bunch of other projects (film and TV), and thought highly of him. One movie that I strongly recommend, which Morita co-wrote, is "Captive Hearts".

Sad to see him go...

I remember when I was 12, I saw the Karate Kid with Elisabeth Shue... I fel in love with her and with Mr Miyagi too... Damn I was bi ... lol

I remember him in happydays.

Aw man.. he was one of my favourite characters. Sounds like he went peacefully, though.
