Canon 20D or Qlypmus E10?

Which takes the better pictures for an amateur photographer the Canon 20D or Olympus E10 ?

SilentKnight 11-24-2005 06:20 PM

Depends largely on the photographer.

Plus, the answer to which is best is subjective.

Validus 11-24-2005 06:21 PM

20D rocks!!!

venus 11-24-2005 06:24 PM

well I have the E10, I have had it since it first came out, thinking of upgrading to something better, the E10 is 4 moega pixel and the canon is 8, so I would assume it would take better pictures overall ?

When you say "better", you're talking in terms of what? Image clarity? Resolution? Lighting? Color saturation? Composition?

It also depends on what media you're shooting for. Anything over 4mP is overkill for the web IMO. Sure, 8mP is better for large format prints, and also gives a little more latitude for cropping.

I've not worked with a 20d myself, so I don't have a firsthand comparative basis. But I've seen the work of a lot of colleagues with 20d's...and online they're impossible to differentiate between the 20d and the e10. But again, it comes down to the skill and talent of the photographer involved.

From what I remember, you can't change lenses on the E10 but you can with the 20D. Also, the E10 is a bit slow to buffer the images...I remember having to wait for the pics to buffer before it would let me take more pics. Chances of that happening with your 20D are slim. The 20D is newer technology as well so if it were me - I'd go for the 20D. Canon cameras ROCK :thumbsup

Canon 20D sample shot. :thumbsup

I just bought the 20D and I love it. No experience with the other.

Stewie 11-24-2005 08:16 PM

I shot with E-10s for years, and after testing several models, I upgraded to the Nikon D70 (now D70s). The new "E" line of Olympus DSLRs are junk, and I just never cared for the 20D or Canon glass. I love my Nikon, though now I would probably go with the new D200 instead. :2 cents:

tony286 11-24-2005 09:56 PM

the e-10 had the most amazing piece of glass on it but it was very slow. Got the 20d now and it rocks.

venus 11-24-2005 11:03 PM

the slowness is one thing I really hate about the E10, you miss allot of shots having to wait for it to write to the CF

yep with 20 d its so fast worth the upgrade but i do miss the lens

SilentKnight 11-24-2005 11:07 PM

True, the slow writing was always a setback on the e10, along with the non-interchangeable lens. Definitely a design oversight on Olympus' part.

An amateur doesn't need either one of those cameras.

Go with the Canon. I found the e10 to be very slow

Doctor Dre 11-25-2005 12:07 AM

I never tried the olympus, but I recommand highly the 20D... I don't see how a camera could get much better

Brent_Moe 11-25-2005 01:55 AM

don't have any of those yet but I've heard Canon 20D works great. :)

RevSand 11-25-2005 06:01 AM

Ditto on all the comments about the e10 being slow... That and you cannot change the lens out.. It does take pretty nice pics tho for a 4MP..

jMEGA 11-25-2005 06:25 AM

I have a 20D and I love it. I've used a firend's e10 after I bought the 20D and the writing to the card was painful. If you wanted to view the pics you took it takes like 5 secs to view the next pic after you pressed the button.

Here are a few pics with my 20D

Seriously though.

Some of the best photography I've ever seen was done by amateurs. My youngest brother is an amateur photographer and his work kicks ass. He's a better photographer than me.

Everything depends on what you intend shooting.

Pics over the weekend of the kids or webmasters falling over drunk at a convention. Then go for a Nikon Coolpix.

Amateur pictures to impress people, then go for the Nikon D2X or the Canon D20, But get a profressional fixed lens. The Olympus is an old camera and the buffer drove me mad.

Yeah I got the EF-S 17-85 mm lens

It's worth the extra $$.

I just got my Speedlite 580ex flash yesterday, that thing is great when bouncing the flash for portrait shots.
