Digital Camera - what do I use?
 

For those who have asked, I use the Olympus E10. Olympus recently introduced the E20 which is supposed to record a fatter file and also has some other new features. I'm very happy with the E10 however for what I use it for -

2. He posted a sample image shot with the camera being discussed.

3. He didn't post his url or spam in the body of his message.

Anyway.. I'm going to check out that Olympus camera now that I can see how well the images turn out.

Dawgy - the Olympus does have slow write times but it's never been a problem with me. If I were shooting journalism or sports and needed a camera that could keep up with the action, that's a totally different situation. I'm shooting nakid girls man....and for what I do - it's perfect.

The trade off (if there is one) is that I get quality images from an affordable prosumer camera but have to shoot a little slower then what some might be used to. One positive things about shooting slower is that it forces you to slow down and think about what your doing. Gives you time to recompose a new shot instead of shooting 12 images of the very same pose (which you'll see plenty of as you check out some of the content sellers that frequent some of the boards).

All in all - it's a great little camera and perfect for what I do and the way I shoot. It isn't a great camera for everyone though -

hmm good point. i guess i expect a lot from a camera. i want to be able to shoot content, but then go shoot a soccer game too.

I use an E-10 as well and love it.

I agree that the slow write times are not a problem. You can shoot 4 frames per minute which I find is more than enough.

The only problem with the E-10 I think is it needs lots of light to be able to shoot hand held. It takes a really good low light picture but you really need a tripod.

I bought an ultra mini camera made in taiwan with 16 mb, it's like 4"x1"x1" and takes video too. Not the best quality pics but good enough for private use and only 79 euro :Graucho

im still having trouble with the write times. in shooting content, i dont really wanna have to stop and wait for the camera, even if its just 20 seconds... i mean... c'mon...

I got a Nikon 990 with a 64M (I think....? hafta check it again someday to be sure....) card in it.... and it's a smokin' camera..... bought it when the 990 first came out..... fucker cost me $1100 bucks at the time.... but it rocks.... still using it today.... fast fuckin' write times, (like a half a second to write a 2048 x 1536 (16 million colors) res image... stores tons of fuckin' pics.... exceptional quality... standard zoom/wide angle, 4X digital zoom, macro, timers, fully manual modes, auto modes, and everything in between..... fully swiveling lens, built in flash, with external flash adaptability, tripod mount..... the fuckin' works.... PLUS a fuckin' lens cap, which most digitals don't come with.

Nikon kicks ass. :smokin

How big of memory cards do you use,
We have the E-20 and love the ability to use dual cards.
For Compact Flash we use a 256mb that we got for $88
and the other slot we use a 128mb smart media...

I also like taking pics a bit slower, I can take about 8 real fast then have to wait for a bit, but if I pause between each shot, which most do for the Model to reposition, then I almost never get the pause...

Any Way the quality is Great..

Oh one last question, PlanetContent, what size and compression if any do you take your pics at?

Well, I think all the photographers here know that this same picture (yours, not the one below) could have been taken with a $600 2-magapixel camera if it's going to be reduced to 600x800 (as here). What is good about this photo has nothing to do with the resolution of the camera (one always profits from shooting a bit larger and then reducing, of course, but wildly larger than the final image accomplishes little if anything other than increasing the save time and storage you'll require).

The shot below was taken at 1600x1200 and has been reduced to 880x660 (I've shown this image before):

What I, as a photographer, like about your photo is obvious: a pretty girl and good lighting done in a magazine style. Olympus makes good lenses, so the photo is nice and sharp, but I'm sure it's been reduced from the original resolution so much that it'd be hard for it not to be sharp.

I agree with Unseen that you dont need to take shots at 5MP if you are only doing web work.

The problem with the E-10 is there is very little difference in write times between all the JPG formats it supports so in the shoot you dont save anything by not taking the larger res.

Although dealing with the resultant 3MB images quickly becomes a pain in the ass. I have been either using a higher compression in the camera or shooting at 1600 x 1200 with minimal compression which roughly halves the file size and I can't tell the difference in quality once it gets to a web ready file.

Hey Dawgy, if you can afford one of the high-priced (over priced if you ask me) top of the line digital cameras, then go for it. You'll get fat files and won't have to wait for them. But for everyone else who is on a budget, looking for a good quality image and don't mind the trade off in a little slower writing times, the E10 and E20 are perfect for this. Good quality camera, excellent optics and dependable as shit.

I only use smartmedia cards in my camera. No particular reason other then I found some 128mb smartmedia cards on sale on some website and bought 4 of them and a nice little wallet to carry them in.

In regards to size and compression - most of the stuff that I shoot for my site is 1024x768 shot in HQ mode. I shoot with very little contrast, very little sharpening and instead fine-tune the images in photoshop. This gives me more control over the final image then letting the camera do all of that for me.

i have an olympus d510 that i bought for personal use. is this good enough for web content or should i get something higher quality?

go to a bookstore and get a book on photography. i was there killing time between class and they had tons of good photography books. i didnt buy one though cause i am hiring a friend of a friend who knows much much more than i do.
