well after thinking on this i think that load balancing might be overkill---something more appropriate for what i'm thinking about might be "hot spare hard drives in a RAID".

i need a box that can run a few hundred domains, have maybe 4 gig RAM, dual processor, and do maybe 20mbps with about 200gig active storage, and 200 gig backup.

with good connectivity at a mooch price. (managed)

you can always do poor mans load balancing using round robin DNS.

create multiple A name records for www with different IPs and/or also multiple @ records for the base url also with multiple IPs.

one box big drive create NFS mount for your content
two boxes with some processing power
NFS mount the big box on the two processing boxes.
round robin dns to the big boxes simple mans load balancing :)

if you have your own servers you can pickup a cheap big ip load balancer for around 700 bucks IMHO the best load balancers out there and a 700mhz processor can easily do a hundred domains

If you decide to go the RAID route..

I don't really see a large point to having one array being "primary" and one array being the "backup array" on a machine. I would suggest going with a 4 drive setup, configured in RAID5 w/ a hot spare.

In addition to the additional drive-failure protection RAID gives you, keep it mind that it is ABSOLUTELY NOT a replacement for proper backups! RAID only helps you in the case of specific hardware failure - if human error, vulnerabilities, scripts that run amok, etc. happen, you simply have then lost your data if no backups exist.

it sounds as though load balancing or a cluster might be more than you need uless its uptime that you are worried about. Either way we are priced about equal to our normal server set ups. We special ize in load balanced clusters and have more tahn a few pew people on this board using our solution. Combine that with the fact that we pier with with uunet, level3, abovenet, sprint, verio, aol, tw, cox, road runner and others and you could see why we might be the best choice. hit me up if you like am happy to help.

wow.. unreal.. we sell the newer models for MUCH more then that.

still amazed how cheap old models are..

i doubt anything off ebay would still have F5 support.. might have some licensing issues too.

Why kill yourself with a F5 or expensive hardware based solutions?? LVS does it all and with cheap assed hardware, the only problem is you need a experienced linux admin to get it running right.

F5 BIG IP 9.x is fucking awesome though.. a bunch of load balancing methods (ie. predictive, observed, round robin, ratio, etc), iRules, monitors, fail over, etc.. its a must in for most mainstream sites.

you're looking at fairly nasty file locking issues doing that with NFS, not to mention that most web servers and NFS (OOTB) do not play well together, especially with htaccess files.

Just my experience with 200Mb/s though. You'd be better off putting a CSS in and direct connecting your backend hosts to a small SAN.
