Sjayne 03-20-2002 09:41 PM

The BBC reported it minutes before I posted..has a reporter on the scene already. My husband does an online news paper and it came across our associated press ticker but haven't found it on their web page yet.

Apparently it was a car bomb across the street from the Embasy.

pr0 03-20-2002 09:42 PM

Sjayne i hope your getting this from reliable sources......cuz im seeing nothing on CNN, Associated Press, or the BBC.....

Sjayne 03-20-2002 09:46 PM

I would never report a news story without having it from a reliable source. I went to journalism school and my hubby would tan my hyde ;)

btw...Bush will be in Lima in three days.

Vox 03-20-2002 09:48 PM

msnbc they got the story

LiveDose 03-20-2002 09:52 PM

Can we tan your hyde for practice???

:Graucho

UnseenWorld 03-20-2002 09:53 PM

MSNBC only says "Seven people were killed Wednesday when a car bomb exploded near the U.S. embassy in Lima three days before a visit by President Bush, police said." Note the word, "near" instead of "at."

Sjayne 03-20-2002 09:56 PM

Sure, but I warn you I have rather a lot of hyde to tan.

Sjayne 03-20-2002 09:58 PM

BBC say 'near' means across the street. Which as it is a car bomb makes sense.

Hawkeye 03-20-2002 10:01 PM

The US government is escalating the War on [some] Drugs in Peru.

If our government insists on causing problems all over the world, it shouldn't be surprised when people fight back.

The really sad thing is that right now Argentina, a very modern and mostly democratic nation, is rapidly plunging into economic and political chaos, and our government is doing nothing. However, our government is sending weapons and soldiers to Columbia, Bolivia, and Peru to back up oppressive dictatorships in the name of fighting drugs.

Is it any wonder that so many Latin Americans hate the US government?

pr0 03-20-2002 10:02 PM

MSNBC says

"This is a breaking story. Check this page frequently for updates."

Sjayne 03-20-2002 10:07 PM

I don't disagree with you Hawkeye. As far back as Carter, Regan and proabably earlier our gov't has been putting arms in the hands of rebels in Latin and South America and then acting surprised when people get upset.

Watching Argentina from the outside (far outside) is termendiously sad.

echo465 03-20-2002 10:07 PM

Reuters has picked it up.

Cnn never says anything unless they have 'visuals'.

echo465 03-20-2002 11:00 PM

CNN picked it up, finally. With visuals, of course:

CNN: "The car bomb exploded about 100 meters (330 feet) from an entrance to the U.S. Embassy." It doesn't appear to have killed any embassy personnel. Also, "an entrance to the U.S. Embassy" could mean little more than an entrance in a large, thick wall, not a doorway to the building proper. The fact that CNN doesn't feature it seems to indicate that in their judgment the proximity to the embassy might be accidental or that the explosion is meant more as a scare tactic to the U.S. than as a serious attempt to kill Americans.

TheFLY 03-21-2002 12:57 AM

It must have been a really huge car bomb to kill 10 random people and injure dozens others... Bush is coming there in 3 days to talk with the leaders of Columbia, Peru, etc... maybe this is a warning to those in power -- don't let the USA nose into things...? On the other hand we don't know who planted the bomb and why... until someone claims responsibility? ...but we know that no Americans were killed or injured in this blast -- go figure...

It will be interesting to see what kind of spin the media in the US puts on this...

Sjayne 03-21-2002 08:20 AM

Ah, right..didn't realise it didn't matter if American's weren't killed.

Lane 03-21-2002 08:27 AM

Sjayne, are you watching the news 24/7 ?

you're always the first one to post them here. hehe

Sjayne 03-21-2002 08:54 AM

Lane, pretty much. My husband runs an online newspaper so always have one of our tv's on the bbc news channel plus have the Reuters online news ticker running.
