locally, i don't save anything on my local computer, i have external discs that any important data goes on, so if the machine takes a dive, the data is still there
you can get an external solution for pretty cheap now, i got my last 200gb drive for $70 on pricewatch.com and a sweet neon lit case for $20 off ebay you can even set it up so the external is a backup drive, and run your backup program to just dump on there automatically backup on my server I use the NAS service from theplanet....all automated |

All you need is a second internal or external hard drive, and a $30 software package called Second Copy 2000. The software makes a backup of your data files to another directory, disk, or even another computer across the network. It then monitors the source files and keeps the backup updated with new or changed files. It runs in the background with no user interaction. So, once it is setup you always have a backup of your data somewhere else.

you need rsync http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/
we backup all our servers to our office and two offsite locations each night so we have full backups of everything. once you have done the full rsync it will only backup files that have changed since the last copy. awesome program with little overhead on the servers. |
Just setup a nice SDLT tape library system to backup all of our servers, We're using the BRU software from Tolisgroup to control it all. As far as the workstations we have these maxtor one touch drives, but I got to tell you the software that comes with it is total crap. If your catalog gets corrupt it never rebuilds properly.

Anyone using the software Cobian http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm ? I'm trying to find out how to backup the whole server into my computer instead of files!

Windows: Just create a scheduled task through the admin screens that runs against a DOS .bat file with predetermined copy commands to an external, mounted location:
sample "copy.bat" Code:
copy c:\temp\* g:\externaldrive\temp\ |

jace, even though you save on external hd. then you still need to backup that drive. Keeping data in one location no matter where that is still needs to be backed up. I make backup to an external drive which is kept in a safebox and then switched around every week.
This will make my data safe in case of hardware failure or fire at the office or what ever. I don't backup servers since they can easily be restored from my local data even though it might require some time and work. |
