Keeping My Priorities In The Right Place

Belinda and I are in Southern Cal for Webmaster Access. My ex-wife calls and tells me that my 5 year old son has a play with his kindergarten class. His first play ever. Tomorrow. At 9:30am.

She didn't tell me sooner because she didn't know the exact date until now. At first I have to admit, I started crying like a baby when I got off the phone. Why? Because I want my son to always know he's the most important thing in his daddy's life and always will be. He doesn't even realize how special this is. I cried because I'm so far away.

But then I sucked it up and bought a plane ticket. Right now I'm posting from the Burbank Airport while waiting for my plane to get here. I'm going to fly up there, watch his play, and fly back tomorrow afternoon in time to make it to the Playboy Mansion Party.

Yes, he only has one line. But that's a very important line to me. I love being a father. :)

Nice choice. And thank the stars that you can make that choice. Most people can not.

Good job, dad. :thumbsup

I don't understand fathers who don't get involved with their kids. They have no idea what they're missing.

I have a blog to my son. I write to him about things we do together, my feelings for him, post pictures, etc. My kid knows his daddy loves him more than anything in the world.

Bravo, man. Bravo. Great to talk last night. Hope we see you when you get back.

Yes, it was REALLY great chatting with you two! You're so much fun to be around.

Elli 11-17-2005 05:14 PM

Wow, that's much more than most people would do, I think. I remember I dropped out of basketball in grade seven mostly because neither of my parents could come to the games.

jact 11-17-2005 05:14 PM

The world would be a better place if parents did the right thing for their children more often. My hat's off to you for being a Father, and not just 'weekend' dad.

Missy 11-17-2005 05:15 PM

You are fortunate that you have a schedule and a bank account that allows you to do those things that mean so much to you, but even more fortunate is your son for having a Daddy who loves him so much. (Although if you're anything like Christian, you'd probably argue that YOU'RE the lucky one just for having him in your life.) Let's just say you are both very fortunate :thumbsup

Have a safe trip... Looking forward to seeing you and Belinda tomorrow night!

I agree with Christian: the lucky ones are the parents who get to enjoy their children. They make life so much better. Looking at things through a child's eyes is pure joy.

Can't wait to see you two tomorrow.

Belinda 11-17-2005 05:17 PM

Yes he is a great dad and thinks about his son all the time. It was sad when he cried about it but he was very excited when he decided to just fly down there to see it and then come back. I KNOW that when we have kids, they will never feel un-loved and I am glad that I get to experience how he is with kids before we have them together.

Niko Bimini 11-17-2005 05:22 PM

No other choice to make my friend. :thumbsup

What the hell are we working for if not for our families!!

Enjoy the play and be sure you ask him for his autograph when he leaves the stage! :winkwink:

And I can tell you'll be a great mom. My son loves you so much. :)

It's really cute when he whispers to you but does it so loud that I can hear it (of course I pretend I can't): "Hey Blenda, I'm going to tell daddy that I'm his but I'm really yours, okay!" Wink Wink.

SO cute.

Donny 11-18-2005 01:15 AM

Now that I'm here it looks like he might not get to perform because he's pretty sick right now. :( Poor little guy. :(

RAM 11-18-2005 01:37 AM

That is a great story and nice to see your doing the RIGHT THING :thumbsup

adultchica 11-18-2005 01:52 AM

That is so sweet! props to you for doing that for your son and I think it's great.

you just did the best thing to do ... :thumbsup

Maxy 11-18-2005 11:19 AM

thats awesome

GlydeGirl 11-18-2005 11:20 AM

Your son is going to remember that his Daddy flew in to see him at his very first play for the rest of his life. Even if he is too sick to go on today, he'll remember that you came to see him! Now THAT'S parenting!

Sosa 11-18-2005 11:21 AM

Very nice of you man, I know I would have done the same thing.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 11-18-2005 11:29 AM

Aw, that's sweet. Nice move Dad. :thumbsup

Be a stage Dad, and tell him to suck it up, otherwise he'll never get hired in Hollywood. So what play and what role is he playing?

BTW, if you need me to take your place at the Playboy mansion party, just let me know and I'll make the sacrifice.

He wanted to do it anyway. And he did. And I was so proud I cried. Because he was scared to death, you could tell by looking at his cute little sweet face, but he stepped up in front of all the people that were there, gulped really deep and delivered his line:

"And that's just what they did!"

Then he turned around and went back by the other kids. I could not have been more proud! Or a bigger baby, I guess, because that was the point at which my eyes started leaking. He was sick and scared to death but he did it because HE wanted to.

I hope he always knows he's #1 to daddy. :) I think he will. In fact, I'm sure he will.
