Will DRM become the norm?

Hi All,

Do you guys think incorporating DRM into *all* downloadable WMV files at pay sites become the norm?

My opinion:

It's good because:

-anonymous p2p spreading of files is made more difficult

It's not good because:

-downloaded files can "expire" when you cancel your membership

Certainly, there are other video formats which don't have DRM mechanisms to be built in...but wmv seems to be the most popular.

wouldn't that help retention when the consumer is itching to see that scene in the file the consumer has on his/her hard-drive? all they have to do is renew again and walla the file plays....

Roald 11-16-2005 02:31 PM

To much troubles with customers, so no (not yet)

ejeet 11-16-2005 02:32 PM

The Microsoft implementation for DRM so far has been bad and inconsistent hence causing problems for surfers who inturn bitch to the paysite owners.

Sexzity 11-16-2005 02:32 PM

There is a way to get around the DRM.
Maby the next big shareware are going to be a media player, that goes around the DRM.

personally I would never join a site (or stay a member) if they have DRM on thier files. I like to download movies and check them out later without having to pay for it again. But thats just my opinion.

Very unfair. Just give them unlimited license lifetime and unlimited video plays for each file. The user can backup his licenses and restore them if he/she formats.

ie Videosz for *most* vids :(

Maybe off-topic, but also a bit annoying is allowing only streaming (TCG) :upsidedow

TheDoc 11-16-2005 02:54 PM

If MS corrects WMP and DRM then it could one day take off.

Pornwolf 11-16-2005 03:25 PM

A few big programs only allow streaming.

Hmm... Does Ox use DRM?

We had these DRM conversation before a year ago. DRM was the big buzz. That buzz is gone.

If you look at it another way, it could also help create chargebacks..

While you and I both know that with DRM they members are technically "renting" the movie, no matter how much fine print you put in the join page, in the members area, and anywhere else, if the movies they downloaded stop working when their membership expires, they have 6 months to get pissed about it, and chargeback...

Just playing devils advocate here.. :)

DRM is the smart way to go

After reading all 20+ replies to the idea of DRM going to be the "NORM" the answer is yes. DRM helps in client retention, true ownership and most important Profits.

All the large companies do it for these reasons and others and with the price of DRM and the ease to integrate it the SMB and one man shops can add it to there site as well.

The once who believe in DRM being bad well you can not please everyone and there will always be that group. But as for the Norm yes DRM will be the norm and look around you will see it more then you think.
