thunderbird is great for filtering out that spam.

apparently you need a little tutorial on what referral spam is, thunderbird is an email client, referal spam is hitting a site tons of times in the hopes of landing on someone's publicly accessible stats pages...

Thanks. I think this has been running solid for weeks now. The IP # list he's used is over 11,000 unique IP #'s now. Most from Russia and Turkey.

what would be the point of landing on someones publicly accessable stats page? backlinks? seems like a stupid way.

It used to work real well years ago. Not just stats page, but sites that would show the top referrers to the site on the homepage. However, none of the search engines really give any credence to these links anymore and it isn't a long term approach. Usually when these tools hit mainstream and are sold for money (which this did a couple years ago), it means that it no longer works.
