Google launches a free counter/analytics service (cya webtrends!)

http://www.google.com/analytics/

I guess they just put all the companies in that space out of business today. Gotta love google's control.

YARGH! This should be helpful :winkwink:

mb 11-14-2005 09:20 AM

Not only is it free, it's the best in the space...

They bought Urchin not too long ago and this is the result of that integration.

Nathan 11-14-2005 09:25 AM

I very much doubt that this will kill places like webtrends. Ask the companies that use webtrends or hitbox if they want to put a google adword ad on their page to track their stats.. I doubt they will say "oh awesome, its google, of course we'll give them free money!" .... also, google seems to be using urchin software to build these reports, which means webtrends pro stuff and hitbox's pro stuff can do much more than google can.

Fletch XXX 11-14-2005 09:26 AM

google has never been a "search engine" company - ive written about this as has many others.

google launched search engine just to make foundation for what Google really is.

Nathan 11-14-2005 09:27 AM

Oh, and btw.. expect the geeks to flock away from google soon... google is doing everything that is bad in their books...

Google losing geeks is not going to be good. and oh god forbid if we see google NOT double their profits next term, the stock market will be devestated.

Brujah 11-14-2005 09:28 AM

Now imagine what they'll do with all this data.

Ace-wtf 11-14-2005 09:29 AM

webtrends is a very strong tool

and remember that they are in biz and know the biz

but still need to check out the google program

So, it's not a hidden counter? I wasn't aware of that... you're right, that could spell trouble!

Sign up and try to log in.

Doesn't look they are ready to roll quite yet. When I finally managed to log in, I got a "Down for Maintenance" notice.

Yeah, gotta wonder... now google will know EVERYTHING about you. They will know what you buy on what site when and how often. They will so much better be able to target ads to you its not fun anymore...

This is EXACTLY why doubleclick basically died a few years ago. The geeks will go mad soon.

EroticySteve 11-14-2005 09:36 AM

Google got it going on!

bigdog 11-14-2005 09:44 AM

is this serverside or something you have to put on all your pages?

dirtysouth 11-14-2005 09:50 AM

Slow as fack! Can't complete the registration/confirmation either.

It doesn't throw up an ad does it?

Screaming 11-14-2005 09:52 AM

Looks like it will be cool.

Doesn't look server side. That would go against google's whole point of offering this... they want access to info.

Its not invisible, its a small box, check the screenshot.

Penthouse_mike 11-14-2005 10:03 AM

it is a hidden counter.
I signed up and put it on my personal page
and there is no image, and no link.

I went to access the stats, but it looks like they are being hit real hard.
It says down for maintence.

Rhesus 11-14-2005 10:04 AM

damn, wow

lopez 11-14-2005 10:05 AM

Xenophage 11-14-2005 10:43 AM

Gonna be very intereting... already have it up on some sites thanks for pointing it out. :)

PornHero 11-14-2005 11:24 AM

I cant get access either.

"We're upgrading accounts. Please come back later.

Thanks for stopping by. We are currently migrating existing customers to the newly improved Google Analytics service. This process will be completed later this afternoon. Please come back then to sign up for Google Analytics. "

Google may be launching all these new products a little too fast for their own good. :2 cents:

pumpkin_head 11-14-2005 11:49 AM

This thread has inspired me to load up www.google.com in Mozilla, and click on Tools->Cookie Manager->Block cookies from this site

Splum 11-14-2005 11:57 AM

They allow adult? Do you trust them with your statistics in adult?

Kevsh 11-14-2005 12:09 PM

I have to admit, I knew about this some time ago. It wasn't a huge secret: Google came to the WebmasterWorld show in New Orleans early in the Summer and had Urchin staff there - they had just bought the company.

I have used Urchin reports for awhile and so I was talking to one of the guys. I mentioned it would be a great fit for AdWords customers to track incoming clicks, etc. He just smiled. I pushed on it and he just said they couldn't reveal future plans for the product.

Damn, I was bang on :)

Yeah, but where are the geeks going? Even if a bigger and better search engine comes out, there is a good chance Google would just buy them.

stereolab 11-14-2005 12:37 PM

google is the last company on earth i want knowing the 'inner workings' of my sites.

same reason they bought a registrar

$5 submissions 11-14-2005 01:01 PM

Thanks for the link. I'll look into it. I wonder how comprehensive their analytics tool is.

Corleone 11-14-2005 01:03 PM

google wants to take over the web...

Theo 11-14-2005 01:57 PM

i wouldn't touch that. best way to fight your seo skills lol
