Well I'll be gotdam, City Of God is the BEST Ghetto Hood Movie EVER made!!!

Ahheem: My Review
Bravo to the cast and crew :thumbsup. This whole film is a MASTERPIECE. The way the story was told through cinematography was impeccable. The whole sequence was on point. The way they flipped through that movie and kept the viewer in tune with everything was amazing. Big-ups to the actors! :thumb: They were actors weren't they? They were so fucking good it seemed like they were really living it like that. Shit was to Real Life. This movie grabs you by the throat and never lets loose. The realism captivated you. A street muthafukka knows that this movie was street. All the characters fit there role to the teeth. It was like 7 movies all rolled into one. This here deserves an Academy Award and a Oscar. Fuck Boyz-N-The hood, MenaceIISociety, Juice and any ol other Ghetto Street Movie ever made. That shit can't equate to the gangsterism displayed in City Of God. And to think, it was a True Story. Kids, Drugs, Gangs, Rape, Robbery, Murder, Mayhem. A continued cycle. Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! Can't get no better than that.

I'm making a wallpaper of images from that movie. Whoever wants a copy, let voice be heard...

saw this movie almost two years ago. im suprised its taking this long to get out there.

movie is very good.

Young 11-12-2005 02:34 PM

oh ya and only one actor was used. Shaggy. Most of the rest of them are people who live in the ghettos of Brazil.

I understand and speak Portuguese so there are a lot of jokes in there that didn't translate well to english. I haven't heard the english audio track because its only available on the Brazil DVD release (weird..i know) but I'm sure it doesn't do any better of a job.

This is one movie out of 3 that I didn't mind reading the english subtitles and listening to the port dialogue.

Playa-Deak 11-12-2005 02:38 PM

Yo, I heard there was also a VERY good documentary included with the DVD. I sure want to get my paws on it... I know the realism of those charaters were just to real. And to think those people who actually were ghetto doing such a good job of acting. Wonder how this movie was directed since they were just regular people. Cuz they acted they asses off...

Sarah_Jayne 11-12-2005 02:40 PM

Peaches and myself have only been telling everyone this for years now.

The documentary on the American version of the DVD is slow...and boring. I hear that the special edition DVD (2 or 3 Discs) has a very good documentary and more stuff on the real people that the movie inspired.

Check out City of Men, a miniseries based on some of the same characters, although in a more modern setting. I liked it even better than the movie. I have the first 2 seasons and I think there's a 3rd that's already been produced but hasn't been released with English subs yet.

...

I knew I forgot to mention something.

The Special Edition is not for our region :(

You can only play it with an all region DVD player.

Get it off E-Bay. no clue where to get a player.

Baker Rd 11-12-2005 02:54 PM

Very good movie indeed, probably the only sub-titled movie worth watching.

Corleone 11-12-2005 02:56 PM

City of god is a great movie :) one of the best I've ever seen

Libertine 11-12-2005 02:59 PM

I was actually kinda disappointed by it. The shooting was somewhat original but nowhere near fantastic, the story was a bit boring, and the acting was only decent. Nowhere near as good as people make it out to be.

Penthouse_mike 11-12-2005 03:00 PM

The camera work is kind of whiz-bang, but if City of God wasn't in Portugese
it wouldn't be remarkable at all.

Hector Babenco makes the best Brazilian movies. Pixote is a better favela story by far. It is hard to find- it costs about $100 on eBay- but it is worth it.

That's what I liked about City of Men, that it gets more into stories in the favelas and doesn't just center so much on the crime story.

Hmmmmmm, interesting... Interesting... What you meant by whiz-bang camera work?

Gottis 11-12-2005 03:07 PM

Director Fernando Meirelles has a new movie out, The Constant Gardener.

I mean the camera is very mobile, very active. Always doing fast pans, zooms, never sitting still and recording the pro-filmic scene.

Michael Bay never lets the camera sit still. He is always rushing towards one of the actors. It is supposed to create tension but sometimes it is almost funny.

Check out Pixote. It is a great movie. It stars a ten year kid who was from the favela and not an actor. A couple of years after the film he was executed by police officers who had supposedly been paid by shopkeepers to eliminate street kids who they considered pests.

Damn good movie, yes! Watched it the other day and must say I was impressed.

On another note, I just watched Crash today. That one beats City of God by miles; it's got to be the best movie of the year.

BlueDesignStudios 11-12-2005 05:25 PM

City of God is a fantastic movie.. no doubt!

If you have an x-box you can just get a mod chip with the dvd software and it will play all region dvd's. There is also software for your computer that lets you play all regions.

Yes, the documentary on the DVD is awesome. Shows that the slums are incredibly even worse than portrayed in the movie.

It's just an all around great film.
