You have to ask yourself:

If there were so god damned many gigantic ferrocious predators back then, why hasn't anything of similar stature evolved to rule the planet again. Its been millions of years and the worst animal out there is the elephant? the hippo? the crocodile?

(The shark should be on that list)

Actually there is a worse animal that has evolved to 'rule the earth': humans. It's all about adaptability and survival of the 'fittest'. What makes us so much worse than any other predator that's every walked the face of the planet is (1) we have more destructive weapons and (2) we're much more vicious; we don't just kill for food.
