What is the average savings/debt of Americans?

If the average american died today, how mch would he leave behind? (as assets or debt)

my friend says 50k, I think this number is rediculously high, as I remember reading that the average american is in debt.

so what is the magic number?

thanx

The majic number is the age at death. The death of an elderly person would usually have a worth of several hundreds of thousands.

Most people live paycheck to paycheck, between mortgages, paying for school, raising children, taxes, car payments, etc. etc... Its tough to build a substancial savings.

Most people have disposable monies and they dispose themselves of it foolishly instead of managing their finances wisely.

America has one of the highest home ownership rates (~68%), so debt- in the form of mortages- is high but misleadingly so since there are more likely to be oft-setting assets (home equity)

Negative 3% according to research...

Its going to be interesting to see what happens to the US (and Canada) when Asia says "Enough already of a continuing devaluation of the US Dollar" causing them to SELL the 2 TRILLION DOLLARS they own in worthless fiat dollars..........

Sending the bond market into a tailspin and mortage rates up to 14.5%.

Vive le gold......(and gold stocks - yay Numont :-) )

most people do live paycheck to paycheck. Myself right now I've been in a good savings mood so I have a good amount saved up. Most of that is going on a downpayment for the new house hopefully soon.

It will average out below zero. Thanks to the brilliant banking system screwing the planet over with nobody noticing it. The world is in debt. Figure out who the creditor is. ;)
