US military sets laser PHASRs to stun (pics)

The US government has unveiled a "non-lethal" laser rifle designed to dazzle enemy personnel without causing them permanent harm. But the device will require close scrutiny to ensure compliance with a United Nations protocol on blinding laser weapons... http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn8275

I have done work in some of the places that design these things, and I have to admit, I was totally blown away with the things they have on the drawing board.

I could tell you about it, but then I would have to kill you :)

you can't permanently blind someone during war but you can kill and permanently dismember people. lol thats funny...

NickJ 11-08-2005 02:45 PM

The uni-bomber predicted this. It is in the manifesto.

Taboo 11-08-2005 02:51 PM

Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response (PHASR)

Someone just wanted to call it a phaser and said, "Make something up so it's a phaser, ok?"

Elli 11-08-2005 03:05 PM

"In the past, the problem with lasers of this type has been that they often permanently blind human targets,"

who do they test this shit on?

seeric 11-08-2005 04:02 PM

omg, who wants to carry that around? lol.

great. now we will have pow camps the size of NYC and have to feed them all, while they are still blasting us with bullets.

:(

The Duck 11-08-2005 04:05 PM

Finally, laser weapons!

pornguy 11-08-2005 04:05 PM

Did some work back a few years ago for some majoe defense contractors. The Design boards are not the only things in those places that would amaze people.

Starwars is a lot closer than you think.

When working for those companies, I realized that most fiction is based on fact.

pornguy 11-08-2005 04:11 PM

PS. Only the United States is concerned about how they injure the other guys.

ajrocks 11-08-2005 04:13 PM

More fun with microwaves

http://www.newscientist.com/article....mg18725095.600

The ADS weapon's beam causes pain within 2 to 3 seconds and it becomes intolerable after less than 5 seconds. People's reflex responses to the pain is expected to force them to move out of the beam before their skin can be burnt.

...
During the experiments, people playing rioters put up their hands when hit and were given a 15-second cooling-down period before being targeted again. One person suffered a burn in a previous test when the beam was accidentally used on the wrong power setting.
?What happens if someone is unable to move away from the beam??

A vehicle-mounted version of ADS called Sheriff could be in service in Iraq in 2006 according to the Department of Defense, and it is also being evaluated by the US Department of Energy for use in defending nuclear facilities. The US marines and police are both working on portable versions, and the US air force is building a system for controlling riots.

Well the difference is that when they were initially looking into laser weapons they realised they could permanently blind an entire battle field with one click of the button.

ihcr 11-08-2005 05:39 PM

how many millions do you think each one cost?

reynold 11-08-2005 05:46 PM

That's the start; just preparing the way for the more destructive prototypes.

Hollywood Horwitz 11-08-2005 06:01 PM

looks like a laser tag gun from the 80's..

SCtyger 11-08-2005 06:13 PM
