Why dont Americans end telephone conversations properly?

Every time I phone the US I feel like Ive been hung up on.

You finish the business with the person on the other end and then you just put the phone down - its strange, it feels incomplete.

Over here we have this whole procedure when ending a call. Some Australians do it as well.

Why don't British people go to orthodontists?

I can't speak for all of us uncouth Americans, but I generally end phone conversations with well wishes and a goodbye.

If you think Americans are bad, try doing some phone conversations with Japanese people and see how they end...<abrupt end of conversation...delay...dial tone>.

It took me a long time to get used to that...

Even in my Japanese phone conversations I try to end with an obligatory "Bye-Bye" or "Ja, Ne?".

they begin with hello - no name - too so why end it with a proper goodbye?

Rinaldo 11-08-2005 08:02 AM

I hate that and I'm american.
My best bud just hangs up on me mid sentence. I absolutely despise that.

Not in my house growing up. We were taught to answser 'Hello, Jones residence'

ssp 11-08-2005 08:13 AM

That annoys the shit out of me too. You can an American helpdesk of some sort. They help you and before you even had the change to properly say "thank you for your assistance", you know.. Brit style, they hang up the phone. They have no manners I tell you. :)

SilentKnight 11-08-2005 08:15 AM

Awhile back I worked as a phone rep for Crapital One - dealing with American card holders...and I'd judge well over half of them never ended the conversation with a polite "good-bye" or similiar. They'd finish talking and hang up. To someone who was raised to use a polite "Hello" and "Good-bye", I always found it rather rude.

But that's Americans for ya'...

NickPapageorgio 11-08-2005 08:41 AM

I say, "Ok talk to you later then, bye" Is that not correct? What should I say? "This call was the bollocks...right then...cheerio mate...bye...have a good day...catch you next time...buh bai"

What IS the correct way to end it?

CherryLipsRosa 11-08-2005 08:54 AM

I just hate when people do that. Here in Costa Rica when people call you and you tell them they got the wrong #, they just hang up in your face without a thank you or sorry or nothing. It just gets to me every time lol

PlugRush Sascha 11-08-2005 09:01 AM

I answer the phone with "WHAT?!" and end the conversation by simply hanging up the phone whenever I don't want/need to speak to the person anymore. I do this because I'm an impolite asshole who just doesn't give a fuck about other people. I'm German, which would explain it going by 3rd Reich standards, however the Kraut of today is very polite and will say "Hello" and "Goodbye" so you feel all tingly and warm inside.

The only people I'm nice to on the phone are hot chicks and family members. Fuck everyone else.

Triple 6 11-08-2005 09:05 AM

my wifeys mom does that - hangs up without saying 'bye'. I fucking hate that. So now when she calls and asks if her daughter is available, i say 'no'

XxXotic 11-08-2005 09:11 AM

and im sure if we were all cordial on the phone you'd find something else to whine about. get over it, it's a phone call.

EroticySteve 11-08-2005 09:12 AM

There are a lot of traditional practices that are all but lost.

Manners is at the top of that very long list. Courtesy takes very little time but goes a very long way.

WebairGerard 11-08-2005 09:22 AM

People in general just don't have manners anymore. A simple "goodbye" or "thank you" does wonders.

KyleHoppes 11-08-2005 09:25 AM

I just say "One" or "100 hundred"

Furious_Male 11-08-2005 09:28 AM

I have always said goodbye and have had others do the same. I cant recall ever getting hung up on with at least an indication from the other party that the call was ending.

Perhaps you talk to thoughtless idiots only?

I figured you'd end it with, "Ok going to take the Lambo for a spin...talk to you later..."

american pervert 11-08-2005 09:40 AM

why do people always say "how come americans ....." people everywhere do stupid shit. I always says good bye, or peace.

They're Crapital One customers - the company that extends credit to practically every deadbeat moron in the U.S.

so true Steve

BigCashCrew 11-08-2005 11:13 AM

I'm American and I've thought about this before too. I hate when I get hung up on w/o the person on the other end saying goodbye. It's interesting that you brought this up. lol

BradM 11-08-2005 11:16 AM

Yep so true. I found this with Americans when I was down there. Canadians are much the same as the Brits in the sense that we probably spend too much time saying goodbye.

Kimmykim 11-08-2005 11:17 AM

I'm so glad I don't have time to talk to people on the phone in the first place.

pr0 11-08-2005 11:18 AM

Someone get these people a kleenex & a cookie

MrChips 11-08-2005 11:21 AM

I think the ultimate answer really having just discussed this with a friend of mind is tha - ding.

You must be talking to rude people lol. My wife is Japanese from Japan, and there is always about a 30 second good bye that goes on anytime she talks to friends and relatives.

Maxy 11-08-2005 11:33 AM

That's a huge pet peeve of mine.

I have a mental list of people who do shit like that that I try to one up in rudeness all the time.
