Cruise ship shoots pirate ship with sonic weapons.
I bet those somali's shit their pants...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051108/...k_sonic_weapon I knew such weapons existed , didnt realise they were mounted on cruise-ships. What if it shorted out and blasted the passengers in a storm or something. But then i get reading the article and it says "compared it to a smoke alarm" hahaha so you get attacked with rocket propelled grenades and you defend with smoke detectors ? OH NO ! :( smoke detectors , the horror , run away , run away.. article below --------------------------------- MIAMI - The crew of a luxury cruise ship used a sonic weapon that blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam while being attacked by a gang of pirates off Africa this weekend, the cruise line said Monday. ADVERTISEMENT The Seabourn Spirit had a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, installed as a part of its defense systems, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line. The Spirit was about 100 miles off Somalia when pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns as they tried to get onboard. The subsidiary of Carnival Corp. was investigating whether the weapon was successful in warding off the pirates, he said. The ship's captain also changed its course, shifted into high speed and headed out into the open sea to elude the pirates, who were in two small boats, he said. He had no further details. Device maker American Technology Corp. said earsplitting "bangs" were directed by trained security personnel toward the pirates. That, combined with ship maneuvers, caused the attackers to leave the area, the company said. The LRAD is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the U.S. military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole off Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships. The military version is a 45-pound, dish-shaped device that can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected. American Technology, based in San Diego, compares its shrill tone to that of smoke detectors, only much louder. It can be as loud as about 150 decibels, while smoke alarms are about 80 to 90 decibels. The devices have been deployed on commercial and naval vessels worldwide since summer 2003, the company said. ------------------- |
arghh these rocket propelled grenades are useless against the americans far superior smoke alarm speakers... lets re-group.
They were probably just so confused.. " hey abdul , do you hear a smoke alarm going off " , " no man , must be someone smoking weed in the back " , " lets get the fuck out of here " |
so now the pirates will wear ear plugs, use bigger boats & heavier weapons
|
Old news. Move along.
|
next it's lasers
|
Pretty damn cool ;) What's up with all the pirates story lately ?
|
150 db is pretty fucking bad. Thats like gun going off next to your ear.. louder actually... that will damage your hearing pretty badly. It's almost as loud as you can get... A rocket engine might be louder...

ahhh us vikings ,dont get scared of anything .... :) |
YARGH!
I felt the thread needed that. |
200 db can kill a person, so I would imagine 150 db is enough that you're not going to want to stick around for very long.

That's a pic of the one the Los Angeles County Sheriff's use. It produces 15,000 watts of sound waves. The waves are so powerful you can hear a song being played crystal clear at over a mile away. Some military LRADs bump it up to 100,000 watts. At close range the decibels of sound can cause instant deafness, brain trauma and nausia. Your head would in essence feel like its inside a concert size speaker box going full blast. The systems were developed after the USS Cole attack and are now deployed on naval vessels worldwide including cruise ships. Allegedly the NYPD tested one out during the protests at the Republican National Convention in NYC. |
