Online Word Lists?

Is there a site that has a complete word list as we see in a dictionary? I don't need dictionaries to look up single words, but a site where i can view all the words starting with 'a' or 'al-' etc. A software would do as well.

No sorry, I don't know but I have a few words I can share with you.

Harmonica, Monkey, Raisins and walrus.
Hope it helps.

are you gonna start cracking?

I need it for writing. Its too cumbersome getting a real dictionary out and flipping through the pages. Harmonica helped TGF, thanks.

I imagine it's frustrating getting all these tongue in cheek and snide replies, so here's one a bit more serious: Why don't you leave penny under your pillow and the Word List Fairy will leave a word list under your pillow which you'll find when you wake up in the morning.

More seriously, what kind of word list is valuable if it's arranged solely alphabetically without regard to the meanings of the words? Even in poetry, one is more concerned with end sounds than initial sounds.

Unseenworld, very astute. In my kind of writing, I make up my own words, and for that a dictionary is very necessary to me. I'm not writing fiction or poetry..

If you make up your own words, WTF do you need a word list for? To make sure the words you make up don't already exist?

Hypo 03-17-2002 01:24 AM

No, I need to look up words and then distort them to make new words. I need the dictionary to find cool sounding words that sound good when distorted. These new words are names of magic spells, magic objects and magical people for interactive games. When I just think up words and distort them I dont create words that are as cool as when I browse through a dictionary. An online word bank would be far easier to use than flipping through a paper one, I'm sick of that already. Now are you going to help any or just continue being nosey?

As for dictionary.com I can use it to find meanings of words i know, not find words I dont know. What I need to do is find interesting words.

titmowse 03-17-2002 04:13 AM

you might try an anagram-generating program. there's one named Word Finder that's free and works with the dictionaries in MS word.
