Alexa.com accurate?

Do you find www.alexa.com to be accurate?

xlogger 11-07-2005 01:59 PM

Just get visitors to download their banner and you can cheat alexa.

yes 50% of the sites are doing that and therefore Alexa sucks :1orglaugh :1orglaugh
(if 100% of the sites would do it they would be very accurate again FYI)

xlogger 11-07-2005 02:04 PM

The Speed statistic is a measurement of the time it takes for pages on a site to load. It is based on load times experienced by Alexa users, and measured by the Alexa Toolbar, during their regular Web browsing.

I honestly think the accuracy is decent enough to compare you site with other sites. But you have to be in the top 100K to get them most amount of info.

e5hosting 11-07-2005 02:10 PM

Yes it's just that some hosting company (not mentioning any names) score very low on the "Speed Stats". Is there an explanation as to why would that happen?

xlogger 11-07-2005 02:11 PM

Look at my hosts alexa ranking, holy crap!!

That is impressive, but how accurate is be speed rating? Wouldn't a hosting company keep their site on a well optimized fast server?

Site Stats for theplanet.com:
Traffic Rank for theplanet.com: 113 (27)

Speed: Average (55% of sites are faster), Avg Load Time: 2.0 Seconds (what's this?)

Jace 11-07-2005 02:20 PM

I have never thought it was accurate

I have a site that I have not even released to the public

I added the alexa toolbar and set my new site as my homepage.....it went from a 4,000,000+ ranking to a 135,367 in less than 2 weeks....I have never posted the url of this site anywhere, and it is not even in any search engine yet

I agree with the traffic rank results until you get under 100,000 the results to seem to be random. Do you think the speed rating is accurate?

well, i just did some online server speed test services, and it ranked about 5-7 out of 25 results on all of the tests....so, yeah, i think that was pretty accurate

That number doesnt mean anything.. You can not base the alexa ranking on the size of the host..

Where do people go on theplanet.com? (what's this)

You would not get accurate information via this method. The geographic location of your host and this site would play a large role in the result. The best way is to do multiple traceroute's and ping test from different parts of the world. You can also use a site like fixedorbit.com to get an idea of what kind of peering/transit is offered by your host.

Alexa might be accurate... in regards to certain lightly competitive areas. However, for more competitive niches/categories, it can be so easily tricked as to warrant a dose of skepticism.
