Verizon Broadband Wireless Rocks ! S. Fla Webmasters Read..

Due to hurricane Wilma we were fucked herer in South Florida . All uor lines were down . No Cable modems or Even Dial up cause bellsouth is still down after 2 weeks . They gave me dates of december before we would be back up . Which would put anyone out of business. Well Verizon has wireless cards for your laptop that give you broadband speeds of 1-2 megs that dial in to their towrs . And for my Desktop PC I bought one of their Pocket PC's that doubles as a modem as well on my PC with speeds up to 500k . The onlyu other option was getting a satellite installed with a 1 meg pipe on it for 600 bucks plus 90 bucks a month . This was 150$ for the wireless card and 200 for the phone + 90 bucks a month for both services ...

FUCKING ROCKS! Try it great for WI FI on any laptop and a excellent back up for when your DSl goes out ...

baddog 11-06-2005 09:28 PM

I hope this helps my stock

Realwild-Terry 11-06-2005 09:29 PM

Oh also getting upload of 100k on Phone and 250 on Wi FI card ... and they also have a huge coverage map..

I was looking into that for my laptop.. so it's 90 for both the internet and the cell phone? Are you limited on how much you can use the wireless internet? IE as in mins like a cell phone..

Its like 60$ for the WI FI I believe and 30$ for the Phone internet . I bought like 4000 minutes though for like 120 more I was just stating for internet . I moved my lines from T Mobiles .

Im on it now on my PC and its smoking compared to nothing ! The laptop card is much faster though ..and If it works everywhere its wel worth it for all webmasters. They also stated that their towers never went out as sprints and T mobiles did during Wilma so I felt more comfertable getting their instead of SPrints new WI fi Service...

Realwild-Terry 11-06-2005 09:40 PM

Their coverage map looks tight too ..

I asked about hooking up pc's to Verizon's broadband and they said they only had cards for laptops. Can you explain a bit more how are you running the PDA as a modem for your desktop??

Online Future 11-06-2005 09:52 PM

Just get a PCMCIA to PCI converter. I have the Verizon card also and simply plug it into the back of my desktop and use it just like I would on my laptop.

I bought the PCMCIA to PCI converter off eBay for like $15.00. All you need is an empty PCI slot inside your computer.

Speeds are around 750 kbps on laptop or desktop.

Good luck.

I had the same problem ... But check this out ..I found the directions to turn my PDA into a USB modem and it works !

I HAVE LINKS TO ALL THE DRIVERS AND IT TOOK ME ABOUTN 1/2 HOUR TO FIGURE IT OUT BUT IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM . IM GETTING BETWEEN 300-500K WITH 100K UPLOAD SPEEDS.

Wmodem Instructions
Here are the instructions that sdppc posted on pdaphonehome.com and slightly modified by me.
Note that you do NOT need to do the "download steps" because the files up above are the download files you need.

Download EVDO drivers for laptop and dialer from Club I mate site.
I figured that I would put all the files and instructions in one place to use the xv6600 as a usb modem for your laptop. I have achieved close to 500k with this.

The steps to take
Download the files
Download the attached wmodem.zip and unpack wmodem.exe to your Pocketpc.
Download the attached dialer/driver and unpack and install on your pc
Download the attached DisconnectActiveSync and put it on your pc

How to use
On your laptop run DisconnectActiveSync
On the PPC turn off "Vision"(sprint) or "Express Network"(Verizon) by holding the end button down until it disconnects.
If this puts your phone in flight mode, take it back out of flight mode, but don't let
it reconnect to the data network.
Start wmodem on phone.
Make sure to pick USB on popup in wmodem and hit start button.

Plug phone into laptop via usb
When new hardware wizard starts, point to drivers attached below which should be on your laptop.

Start dialer.

User is [email protected]
password is vzw
Dial #777

NOTE:
After using this method, you won't be able to USB activesync without re-enabling it. On the pocket PC go to start menu-->programs-->activesync, select the options tab... then click the options button... then check the checkbox and select "USB" from the dropdown.

Are you getting the same speeds as the laptop does . I have the laptop rolling too but didnt buy the part due to gettnig the pda to fire up as a usb modem. Great Technology ..

Yeah the speeds are the same. It actually seems a little faster because my desktop is a more powerful machine with a lot more ram.

All I did was buy the PCMCIA to PCI converter and plug the card in the back of my pc and fire up the Verizon software and connect. I use this as a backup for when my cable goes down.

It's just like having a PCMCIA port on my desktop. :thumbsup

Realwild-Terry 11-06-2005 10:00 PM

I also want to add that After getting hammered by hurricane wilma here in Hollywoodd , FLA I have no faith in Bellsouth or Cable modems any more . IT has taken them over 2 weeks so far to do anything . If it wasnt for direct tv I would be stuck without out internet or television . The power company was on it but for communications , to have a land line down for 2 weeks is just un heard of ..Doesnt everyone agree ? All the due dates for Cable modems and Dsl are Dec . 8th ..

Online Future 11-06-2005 10:01 PM

I bought something like this:

Again good luck! :thumbsup

Fuck Verizon. Time Warner is comming out with a wireless plan soon!

I will totally do that ..I just bought the 2 Systems yesterday and was happy with the laptop running wireless broadband . But when I found directions to turn my Pocket PC into a USB modem I was way happy ..
Being offline for 2 weeks and having to go to an packed Kinkos or Starbucks because no one has access and updating porn sites was no fun and next to impossible ..without getting hasseled ...
I just wondered what happened to the data lines here to be out for so long .

Soon is a key word ..Seems like Verizon got a big jump on em especially in the South Fla area and the new Orleans area..which are pretty big areas..

When I was there last year, for whatever the storm was that went through just north of WPB, after a few days I called the cable company to see when I would have service back. There answer was that they could not begin to check the lines until FPL had power on and to call them if my power came on but alas their was no phone service to call them. You have to realize you have no one to rely on but yourself.

I'm assuming the cellular internet works much like text messages because even when the cell coverage was minimal to nill you could send text messages. I could care less about phone service but I do need net access. A generator to charge laptop batteries and cellular internet access would be fine. Nice to see you went that route and it is working for you.

You should also petition your state govt and federal govt to force FPL to burry their lines. If they did you would rarely lose power but they view it as "too expensive" to do. If they had done it when people wanted them to in the beginning this would not be an issue now but they prefer to line their pockets first. Cable and telephone lines should also be burried instead of telephone poles. Aside from the practicality of burrying the lines I think it would have a vast aesthetic appeal too.

Yes Cell service was down as well For 3 days and we did have text . But that was Sprint and T Mobile . We did have a generator and enough to get us through 4 days of food and BEER ! This storm turned me into an alchoholic . But after that Cable said same thing (about power coming back) and than phone went out stating they can only work off of generator for so long . So we were left with nothing again . So when yuo have to fend for yourself your right . So I went and ordered a satelite for internet but with this working so well Im going to wait till next season to have it installed ... They also cant install that till next tuesday . My direct tv dish looked like a pretzel but I banged out and got it to work asap . We got power up quick beng on the hospital grid and all so that worked out great. Also I made the mistake of putting my business lines on Vonage ... so no internet no business lines either . Before next season I will Have

Satellite Internet Installed
The Diesel Generator That Runs the Whole Business wired in to switch on.
Direct TV
Freezer full of meets
And a Kegerator ..

Than We would be set ..

We did have FEMA come out to survey our damage ... ( roof damage and 80 feet of fencing blown down .) and its looking good for the loan @ 2%

Here are some some clips of what It looked like here . Now I have High Speed I will make longer ones that show the aftermath as well ...

Clip 1 - 110 MPH Winds Hitting us head on.

Clip 2 - This is me getting knocked over by the winds during a lull in the storm.

The estimated cost to bury the power lines is $80 Billion minimum and some estimates take the cost to $200 Billion.

The next biggest obstacle is being able to dig up every property owner's lawn without a huge legal hassle which would inevitably ensue.

Already have one, though, with power just going on about 4 days ago, it was no use to me.

A generator is amust have ... I got one for 750$ and it ran 2 Refrigerators all my Computer Equip phone charges fans , Direct TV , XBOX and Big Screen TV ...

It paid for itself in the first week of Katrina.. just look at it as if you had to get a hotel room for a week here at least 150 a night ..Than use the grill and bam your set cold beer and meats and wi fi internet...Video Games , Television and Fans to cool the place down although we had a nice cold front after the storm ..
