I am surprised at the negative attitude. I liked the show. I thought the writers worked very hard to have a fair and balanced debate with the positions of both sides being told.
Frankly, I thought this show did a better job presenting what hte Democrats and Republicans are all about than the real candidates are usually able to do. As for Alan Alda, he has played a lot of serious roles since MASH, and I thought he's done well in this role as the conservative. Maybe its too much to hope for, but I sort of hoped that a show like this would spark a renewed debate about politics and what is best for the country. There is no doubt that while they did hit every respective party position, they also nailed the leading issues the country faces right now: war, oil prices, health care, immigration, etc. As a good Libertarian, I didn't like either of them, but its still a lively discussion. I hope many people watched and will join the national debate on important issues like these. Of course, that's probably too much to ask... Matt |
I thought it was great.

It was OK.
I liked that it was a debate and not the theatre we see from real presidental "debates" |
I didn't think the "debate" was a particularly good piece of drama. But it did serve as a reminder of how inadequate a two-party system is: you have to be a really fervid supporter of one side or the other not to find yourself agreeing and disagreeing with them both. Yet there is no option which might be less of a compromise.
Some of Alan Alda's "asides" were also a reminder of how little we are told about the realities of the world and thus, even if we make up our own minds rather than swallowing whole the rhetoric of our party of choice, it is almost pure chance if we arrive at the same decision we might reach if we were better informed. |
It was a real yawner for the show. Esp with the promo for it. The best ya can say is that it was a new idea. So give 'em credit for trying. They should of grabbed a real monitor for the debate like Jim Lehrer from PBS. That would have made seem more real and might have made a big difference??? Assuming Lehrer would do it???

It was definitely interesting being a live show, I enjoyed it and I'm not a regular watcher of the west wing. Was interesting to air something like this live and they seemed to have done a good job in my opinion.

I used to watch it on the first few seasons, then I got bored of it. at some point it became dragging
|
anyone got the west coast version, i want to see what the differences were
|
I find that show a boring one. :(

I watched it about the same way I watched the real one... I basically watched it in-between commercials during the basketball game. So when it went to timeout, I went to the debate...
I thought the beginning was pretty authentic like until he asked for the rules change. Not because it appeared fake, but because it'd never happen unless Bill Clinton ran against himself and since he can no longer run for President of this wonderous and great nation (ah-hem)... The ending was also pretty good. My kids and girlfriend actually thought it was real.. hehe... I told them it wasn't about 20 minutes into it. haha... ahhh... Damn... that part was funny as fuck.. to me. I actually had to ask my GF, "Who is Alan Alda?" To which she replied, "That guy from MASH I think." To which I queried, "Is that a question or a statement?" And she answered, "So is he running or not?" |

the Alan Alda character has taken a turn for the worst the last couple of episodes, he has become that republican-evilish, in the pocket of big business, while he seemed perfectly okay before thata at first I tought they were portraying what would happen if the republicans run McCain |
