NY state sucks for insurance. $290.74 monthly. Office visits not covered. That was the one and only provider listed for my zip code. sheesh.

Pandemos 11-05-2005 02:04 PM

Having to pay for even emergency medical care must really suck.

Tat2Jr 11-05-2005 02:16 PM

When I was around 31 years old I had a massage, and the women told me she thought I had MS. I went and got insurance that month. Went to the doctor, and they confirmed I did have it. My medicine runs $2000 every month! Thank god I got it before getting diagnosed. If you're over 28 years old, and don't have it.... you're crazy.

Sly 11-05-2005 02:21 PM

A common excuse I hear from friends is "insurance is too expensive!" And yet, they'll eat out for lunch Monday through Friday and eat out for dinner 2-3 nights a week. For a healthy person, insurance can be as low as $80-120. Instead of eating out 8 nights a month, only eat out 4 nights a month and you'll have the extra $80 needed easily.

Priorities.

If you live in TX, Unicare is very good coverage and very inexpensive. I believe it's available throughout the country.

MaxCandy 11-05-2005 03:26 PM

If you are at the least DBAd go to your local chamber of commerce and sign up. They pool all the businesses together for lower group rates. Its well worth the $300 a year or so to join the chamber (plenty of other benefits as well for small business).

Good point, Tony. I have blue cross myself. Even though I live in the Philippines now, blue cross still covers me via their reimbursement program.

pornguy 11-05-2005 07:01 PM

Dont only get Health. Get a life policy. Make sure that your wife, kids girlfriend or what ever the case, can pay the bills. Mainly of you make most of the money. You want them to continue in the life you gave them.

People die every day.

Good thread...I posted this in another thread about a non-profit heath insurance company set up specifically to assist performers and independent contractors in the adult industry:

I haven't heard any mention of the incident in the mainstream or industry press yet. As word spreads, I'm sure monetary support will increase.

With regards to the health insurance issue, this serves as a cautionary lesson for performers and others in the adult industry. It's easy to mock the uninsured when your health care is covered by a corporation, but there are literally millions of uninsured people in this country, many of them small business owners or independent contractors.

My health insurance is covered through the mainstream business that I own, however I recently learned through the AIM Foundation web site (http://www.aim-med.org) that a non-profit industry health insurance organization has come into existence, which might be of benefit to freelance entertainers and others in the adult biz.

It's called NAICE - the National Association of Independent Contractors and Entertainers.

Given that I already am insured, and I don't know much about this organization firsthand, please research it yourself. I am simply offering it as a possible option for adult industry people. I'm sure there are many industry people whom are uninsured.

If someone knows more about NAICE, it may be worthwhile (and timely) to post a thread about it. Adult companies, if they don't provide health coverage, might want to consider making their talent aware of the program.

Get well Nikki,
