Wow, 8 years in this business..

Just remembered, 8 years almost exactly since I started out in this biz, spamming the shit out of Infoseek. Those were the days, $30k a month was alot of money for a poor student like me, and it was so easy it was ridiculous.
It's been a fun ride. And it aint over yet :winkwink:

Sure this type of thread has been done a 1000 times over, but when did YOU start out, and what did you start out doing?

Spunky 11-04-2005 08:06 PM

I wish I was making that kind of loot back then..damn..you done pretty good for yourself

KingK7 11-04-2005 08:09 PM

First check I ever got was actually from some thing called NetRadio.com
$100, spamming their links in IRC rooms, then onto Infoseek.

Then I found XPics......

Started at Sexhound July 1999, entry level marketing @ $15/hr. Started out as a great part time gig for a college kid and only got better.

Screaming 11-04-2005 08:25 PM

We both had much more hair then.

I remember hosting infoseek pages on my pc, via a dial up. Lose my connection, and never get the same ip again.

a search will probably pull up the stories. Tim and I have told them a number of times. It was owned by Chris Ramirez and Sean Taylor. Chris was all over the place. Twisted and manipulative are good words to describe him. Sean was a good guy that got caught up with the wrong biz partner. I often wonder what happened to both of them.

The short version - I worked there until like June of 2000. While there I met Tim (the guy i founded DormAngels with). At the end of that year, with the help of some great employees had signficantly increased revenue and traffic. Bringing in over 200k in profit a month. The reason Tim and I left was they were getting involved in some stuff illegitimate stuff in Russia.

6 months after we had left I heard revenue had dropped 100k. Still plenty of profit. With in a year their monthly revenue was under 100k (supposedly) and they were bringing in like 20k in profit. The two owners had plenty of cash hidden under the mattress.

I got a call from one of their banks saying it had a negative balance and they were going to come after me for the 20k - because I was still a signer on the account and they couldn't find Chris - by that time he was in either panama or brazil, that was probably 2002.

About a year and half ago I heard they returned to the states - and were breeding dogs. But I don't really know.

For better or worse - they taught me a lot - through both positive and negative examples of how to run a business.

Chris had some great biz ideas that were almost always a year or two ahead of their time. It's too bad they pissed it away.

Haha yeah, I used to have pages on my ISP freehost until the fuckers shut me down... INSTANT listings, man that was great. Remember they closed down the instant listings for the weekends at a specific time, so the listings would stay on during the weekend if you got them in... Always had 100 browser windows open ready to submit just before the deadline :1orglaugh

Dalai lama 11-05-2005 07:49 AM

since 2002 in business.

I remember when we went to NYC for the Adult Convention you showed off your webcam. You had a poster behind you at your booth (in front of a fountain?) and I was drooling over the idea with the live cam.. I don't remember quite the year, we started in 1996 with SteffieCam and I think I ran into you at the convention in 97? 98?.. in Jersey/NYC Adultconvention. That convention was so tiny, its almost laughable. Your camera was great, we had a booth right down the walkway from you. The only time we ever got a booth.

Sept 26th 2006 will be our 10th Anniversary, I can't believe were still around and kicking,, freaking amazing.

amalekite 11-05-2005 09:35 AM

Congrats on 8 years!

Damn, you were netting $30k 8 years ago. I will assume you're making much more than that now or did that go the way of Can-Spam?

MrJackMeHoff 11-05-2005 10:38 AM

I started in 1994.. I wrote the code and released Paradise Web (Pergatory [mispelled]) Guestbook Server a rival to the then popular Lpage. Also wrote several message board softwares.. Sold off to hotboards.com several years ago. Started a bunch of new businesses since then.

Awesome, that guestbook was hugely successful, at least it seemed that way. Did you make a killing when you sold it?

adultchica 11-05-2005 10:56 AM

Been doing it for 3 years..I'm still a newbie in this biz.

I've come a long way in a short time though (sort of). I've almost tripled my income since I started. Still not rich like some of you guys though
