What Do You Say When A Bum Asks You For Spare Change?

What Do You Say When A Bum Asks You For Spare Change?
Depending if I'm drunk or not I usually ignore them or tell them change comes from within. What do you say?

chronic avenger 11-04-2005 02:21 PM

spare change?!? N!ggA get a spare job!
-Robbin Harris

wdsguy 11-04-2005 02:25 PM

I give them the addresse to the nearest food kitchen.

CuriousToyBoy 11-04-2005 02:26 PM

I will give ANY busker a few coins, at least they are trying.

Straight out beggars get a kick in the head on a good day.

;-)

phonesex 11-04-2005 02:27 PM

sorry no cash

SmokeyTheBear 11-04-2005 02:27 PM

If i had spare change i would be taking the day off hanging out on the street with you.

Doctor Dre 11-04-2005 02:27 PM

When a guy plays an instrument or something I don't mind giving him a few coins ... when there is a guy begging that looks like a junkie I don't give him anything.

Last week there was a black dude with a mohawk in a wheelchair, with no legs and only 1 arm that asked me nicely for change ... I didn't have any so I gave him 5 bucks . I really felt bad for the guy

i am the same way...there is a local guy here that is in a wheelchair...he sits all day and plays the guitar and sings, and he is actually really good

we usually give him $5-10 when we see him

Rice_Master 11-04-2005 02:30 PM

Well normally they would hold a sign that says "Need Money For Booze, Well.. At Least I'm Honest"

And i'll be like... I'll be honest too, "NO"

LMAO I like that one :1orglaugh

QuaWee 11-04-2005 02:37 PM

give him/her $2-3

J-$ 11-04-2005 02:40 PM

No, YOU give me spare change

bopha 11-04-2005 02:54 PM

I might bring him back a cheeseburger or some food. Some times the beggars don't want it, they want money for crack or whatever. I don't mind helping someone who is in need. In our city, this happens a lot. They trap you in your car at the store, or drive through line, the stoplights. They won't leave until you give them money. That's horrible.

pradaboy 11-04-2005 02:56 PM

actually working @ mcdo looks harder then lots of other jobs I've seen ...

Doctor Dre 11-04-2005 02:59 PM

If the guy is a viet vet, and claims he can't walk no more... just grab his change ... and watch him get on his feets very quickly ...

Then when he start yelling at you, you can just say "Look, I just cured you"

seeric 11-04-2005 03:05 PM

when i was out in l.a. alot, i would always go out to dinner with people and make everyone save their leftover that they hadn't mutilated or where there was a decent portion of the meal left over. there are plentyof homeless in l.a., shit some of them are probably people who came out there looking to hit it big and hit the streets. i normally hand them a bag of food from some good restaurant with like a 5 dollar bill inside. if you're gonna be on the streets you might as well be warm. for 5 bucks you can get a couple bottles of cisco or some mad dogg 2020. the way i see it is, the restaurant would throw away the food anyhow, and to give the guy 5 bucks isn't gonna kill me, i spend sometimes hundreds of dollars a night on liquor, why shouldn't he be entiled to 5 bucks worth. living on the street is a job.

Maxy 11-04-2005 03:18 PM

Depends on my mood usually. Sometimes I really feel for them, sometimes I really don't.

LauraLee 11-04-2005 03:21 PM

I usually give them money and usually its not just change. I know their are a million reasons why i probably shouldn't but truthfully i don't care about those reasons. When i suprise them and actually give them money rather then disparage them- for that brief milasecond they are uplifted. I know that most of them are in the position they are in by choice, but damn i don't know all of their stories. I never walked 1 inch in their shoes- so who am i to judge.
I know most will shake their heads after reading what i said and think i am a dumbass but i really do not care. Out of the 100 who might choose to be where they are- just maybe there might be 1 who had life circumstances that i will hopefully never have to live or understand. For that 1 person it makes everything worthwhile.

If i can make a destitute person elated for just that split second, why not. I certainly didn't put myself out. Oh, and i smile i while i do it.

Scott McD 11-04-2005 03:26 PM

It depends, sometimes i give them a few pounds, sometimes i just look away.

If the person is actually pestering me, then more often than not i will just leave it.

However if like Laura says, you do feel genuinely sorry for them, and they are just asking nicely, i don't see the harm in it, and it actually makes me feel pretty good knowing that it probably will bring a little happiness to what it probably a miserable life for them...

hydro 11-04-2005 03:37 PM

I really don't have much pitty for bums. My parents came to america not knowing a single word of english while my mom was pregnant with me yet they still managed to get jobs. They worked wherever was hiring and for nothing more than $5 an hour, ten years later my dad started his own auto body repair shop and my mom was one of the top 20 real estate agents in the dfw area. If they can accomplish that theres no reason why somebody who was born and went to school here can't get a damn job at walmart. One thing that always amuses me is being on 1 street and seeing kids mowing lawns for $10 a house when its 100+ degrees outside and then going on another street and seeing grown men beg strangers for money under a shade.

TheLegacy 11-04-2005 03:40 PM

anyone wants to learn a fast lesson in human behaviour?

do what I do when a bum comes up asking for change for dinner or a coffeee.. I generally say, "I'll do one better, let me take you down the street here for coffee and I'll buy you lunch"

100% of the time I am told to "fuck off" - I would love to pay for a coffee if thats all it takes.

I followed one walking away from his spot one day after work, and guess what? he walked up to the same car parking lot and got into his new fucking Jeep Cherokee !! Thats when I learned the deep truth. help those who really need help - not just blindly offer assistance.

Yeah, I have seen this happen first hand. Most of them have no interest in working hard to better their situation. :2 cents:

My dad worked with a guy who went on a business trip for 4 days. He came back to his house burned down. Upon further investigation he learned his wife, and 2 small children had died in the fire.

He lost all control of himself and could be found laying in the streets in the middle of winter crying his eyes out in 2 feet of snow and pushing around a grocery cart with a sleeping bag and some food in it.

Everyone has a story. Sometimes all it takes is to listen.

That's a one in a billion story most of them are mentally ill or severe drug addicts. I would like to do a Bum Reality show where they compete for $50,000. Who ever get's their shit togethor the fastest wins :)

detoxed 11-04-2005 04:05 PM

bury his body in the suburbs 50 miles out

beemk 11-04-2005 04:10 PM

you ask them for $ before they can ask you.... it totally throws them off and they usually dont know what to say. i even had one bum in a wheelchair give me change before when i asked him... he must have been all doped up. thats the only bum i gave $ to.

Fuck man. Brutal story. But you're right, everyone has a story.

Unless the guys an idiot, rarely do I walk by without offering up something. Usually I'm in a hurry so I'll just give them whatever change I do have in my pocket-with our bloody $1 and $2 coins, it's usually more than it sounds like (I figure it saves me on the pocket repairs anyways).

Paid for a meal once and I've given out a couple of 20's, but that's a real rarity.

I pitched a show like that and was met with silence and disgust

It was called Second Chance...winner gets 250k and a job making 100k

the others were then put into halfway houses and gainfully employed

I was told it was preying on the misfortunate events of desperate people

I said "I thought that was American Idol"

met with equal cold stares

C_U_Next_Tuesday 11-04-2005 04:33 PM

haha.. I gave one a ride on 101 from Healy, CA to Portland Ore..bought him dinner, scrounged some good weed for food from some hippies on the side of the road.. smoked him out..took him on a tour of my favorite redwoods... he was convinced I was a serial killer...it was a wild day.

Traphic 11-04-2005 04:35 PM

Bums are good luck. I stole a purse when I was really young.. About 7 or 8, I came up on a g. I gave this bum a 5 dollar bill.. he told me god bless.. That night i got caught for the purse, the lady called the cops and the cops never came.. Ever since i've always hooked those foos up.. Like someone said.. it's a full time job being a crackhead on the streets..

p.s. anyone ever seen www.bumvertising.com? ->> Shit's comedy

foulfowl 11-04-2005 04:35 PM

I usually find a spot for them on one of my sites...man, you'd be surprised how talented bums are.

SykkBoy 11-04-2005 04:36 PM

I figure it doesn't kill me to give someone a fucking dollar...but it depends on how they ask...I don't pay for funny signs anymore, but I admit to being a total sucker for a dog...

Dalai lama 11-04-2005 04:41 PM

ragingdick 11-04-2005 04:44 PM

my favorite was a guy who said:

"hey man, i ain't gonna bullshit you. i gotta sleep down by the river tonight, and i need some money for a six pack to keep me warm."

i gave him a couple bucks. can't deny a man a drink who has fallen on hard times.

jacked 11-04-2005 04:55 PM
