Porn is Doomed

From wired.com

Quote:

"Welcome to the real world of Internet porn, a market where the easy money has long since been pocketed"

"It's still possible to make a modest income by posting some free pictures and links as part of an affiliate program"

"When we started in late '95, our conversions were about 1 of 20. Now our average is 1 of 200," he says. "If you started now in this business with $5 million and didn't make a single mistake, I still don't know if you'd make it."

"Half of all adult sites gross less than $20,000 a year. Breaking in anywhere in the chain is tough. Going big is almost impossible. "

"Part of the problem, of course, is that few advertisers outside of the porn world want to be associated with the industry. Even companies that supply the business often pretend they don't"

"This has become more like any commodity business - lots of people with similar products," says Talley. "The number of sites has shot up; our conversion rate has stayed flat, but we're putting 10 times as much work into keeping it there."

Sounds like he's just a quitter..... He just wants to whine because he is insecure about his earnings, 20k still seems pretty decent

FATPad 03-14-2002 08:19 PM

YES! MORE STORIES LIKE THIS!!

Then all the jackoffs who don't know basic HTML, can't send an email and think the way to getting rich is putting up galleries with 30 high quality pics will move on to the next media driven "get rich quick" shit.

Jee.. no fucking wonder.. It's tgp that's the reason for this..
TGP surfers are NOT qualified buyers..
before it was 1:20 because free porn was scarce & people had to pay for memberships to get porn,, Now, people can just go to the hun, or pk or any tgp & get all the fucking free porn they want & never have to be a member of any paysite...

about the drop in the conversion ratio.. think about all the international surfers who dont read english & just look at the pics.. also in that factor is the number of underage surfers.. also, those without credit cards.. all these people were GIVEN access to FREE porn..

Why on earth would Jack Off Peter join your sponsor when he can yank his pud all fucking day surfing thehun galleries?

Forest 03-14-2002 08:42 PM

S.D.

U forgot about the Shave and what that does to your conversions

RobertD 03-14-2002 08:46 PM

I totally agree! Maybe we should start telling the press our horror stories of what getting by was like when we started and how impossible it must be now.

ZapMan 03-14-2002 09:22 PM

I have seen more people come and go over the last year that it is not funny at all. The majority of people in the world that aspire to be rich do not want to work for it. Why do you think so many people play the lottery. So many people try this business out thinking they can put out one page and wake up in the morning a rich person. This business like all others takes lots of time and effort and knoledge. Most people are not willing to do the work and they do not know what is involved before they get into it. If you don't want to sit on your computer 12-20 hours a day and work and work and work and give up your social life and everything else just to learn how you might be able to make money in this business, then you need to go away.

If you're doing it well then why would it bother you?

It seems to me that the only person who should be afraid of newbies is somebody who has no "edge" on the competition :-)

When was the last time you read anything in a printed media rag that had any idea about what they are talking about in our business. They love quoting 2 year old statistics and pretending they know what the fuck they are talking about. I read that article a while ago and it made me happy because if anything it will keep the people looking for the easy away out of this business. And it will make the cynical ones who aren't even making enough for their hosting bills quit. That was a tiny tiny article but it was on the top of the mag cover. It's called bait.

Good example whenever I read an "internet" article or how to in a magazine(even computer magazines) they are still telling people to register with Verisign! That should tell you that these people are just writers pretending to know what WE really do know.

Fuck'em. When you see articles like this , enjoy them see if anyone you know is mentioned in it and then get back to work.

There are sites to be built and content to be shot. Back to work people!

LD:winkwink:

The main problem is the number people opening sites with, little knowledge of the Internet and no knwledge of porn.
Then they are surprised they are not millionaires over night. yes it's tougher today because of the competition.
If you have a good product, that surfers want to buy then you are half way there.
The problem is most do not they just think 10,000 pics + 100 videso and I'm made. then the surfer see this pile of crap and goes to the Hun, where he can get free crap.

smack 03-14-2002 11:18 PM

it's like anything else. have a good product backed by a strong advertiseing campaign and throw in a little luck. and hopefully you'll come out doing alright. where would pepsi be today if they were like "well fuck we lost half our buisness to coke, better pack it up and start selling porn" lol
