Windows XP question

One of the things I hate about XP is that I can never find what I am looking for. So this is what I want to do.

#1. My laptop has XP, and a DVD burner.
# 2. Desktop has 98SE
# 3. Both are networked together. I share files, so laptop sees all that is on desktop.

I want to do a system backup, with the goal of putting the restore files on a DVD. So, where is the backup found on XP? On 98 it is Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup. I am not seeing this with XP.

Is this because XP has the restore feature? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

start
control panel
performance and maintenence
system
system restore

I had to go look too!

On system tools menu look for the files and settings transfer wizard. This will completely copy everything you need from one drive to another :)

After ya copy it just burn it.

I don't really want to fill up my laptop with all the stuff I have on my desktop to be honest. A few DVD's will suffice.

With the option I suggest just pick out what you want copied. You do not have to copy everything. Just specify what you want.

That doesn't really help. . . . I guess I can install the DVD burner I bought myself 2 years ago on the desktop. Probably be easier.

I think you might have XP Home edition?

I think you have something turn off to keep people out of the admin areas.
look for something to let you see files.

sumphatpimp 11-03-2005 05:30 AM

look for
"show hidden system files"
and click on it

I'd suggest using a program like Acronis True Image for backing your shit up. It's a realy nice program and is also good for any XP quirks with hardware upgrades.

Also, you might think about getting an external hard drive for your backups. You can get a 300 gig external pretty cheap, USB or Firewire. Much easier than using multiple DVDs.

the screen cap tells us all. I hope baddog already got his questions answered.
