OT - Gomery report: what do Canadians think?

Curious as to what the Canadians here think of the results of the Gomery Commission findings?

Still plan to vote Liberal in the next election?

Should Cretchface be investigated, charged & jailed by the RCMP?

Whatcha' think?

BradM 11-02-2005 03:54 PM

Worse things have been done. Let it go.

And yeah I will be voting liberal, I am a party member. :winkwink:

Paraskass 11-02-2005 03:54 PM

Chretien should be locked up.

Money should be retrieved from those found guilty.

So its okay for the Liberals to have ripped off $150,000,000 of taxpayer funds - then cost us another $30,000,000 for the Gomery Commission to hold a public inquiry?

Oh, but at least the Liberals are willing to repay $1m of that back - bless their little hearts.

Let's not forget the $2,000,000,000 billion dollar gun registration fiasco. Or the Seaking chopper fiasco. Or the leaky British subs they bought that are ideal for, well...self-destructing.

We won't mention the small gov't shipping contracts Paul Martin's CSL company was handed without public tender (contracts Martin says were only a "few hundred grand" - but were actually tens of millions of dollars).

I'm left wondering - what are the "worse things"?

I'm going to vote liberal next election aswell. Look at the alternatives, we got nothing.

There were people in the liberal party that fucked up, but that does not mean the whole party is worthless. They have done some amazing things while in power. I'd hate to see where we'd be now if the Reform party, oh wait, the Canadian Alliance... oh I mean the Conservatives were in power for all that time, they can't even decide on a name, talk about flip flopping. :1orglaugh

Manga1 11-02-2005 09:49 PM

I'll vote Liberal. Better the devil you know....

Besides, I would hate to have Harper or Layton running the country. Then we would really be fucked for good.

SilentKnight 11-02-2005 09:55 PM

I just think its incredibly sad and pathetic that the Liberals can fuck us over so badly - and yet people will still vote for them again simply because there's no credible alternative.

I totally agree neither Harper nor Layton are fit to run the country.

We're fucked. EOS.

BlackCrayon 11-02-2005 10:05 PM

in my opinion this kind of thing happens in every goverment, these guys just got caught. i'll still be voting liberal, the conservatives are almost as bad as bush if not worse and ndp talks nice but wouldn't have a clue what to do if they got in.

SK - Every country has their political fools and IMHO they really don't go into politics to serve their country - only to serve their wallet. Where they are lucky is that they always have a scapegoat. There's always someone else that can be blamed. Truth be told, they are all fucking us over. I repeat what the others have said - better the devil you know than the one you still have to figure how sharp are their horns.

The other thing is that I fear we'll get some conservative trying to please the bible-thumping crowd. Then we're royally fucked - they'll use our money to live like the Rockefellars + they'll want to tell us how to live our lives. No thanks - I'm voting Liberal yet again.

kaori 11-02-2005 10:21 PM

better the Liberals then the Bloc...
And I don't want a mini Bush!

Mike Okitch 11-02-2005 10:26 PM

Harper is too stuck up and Layton is a leftist incompetent. So really what are the options?

If I had to take a bet, I would say that Martin will win his next elections and for the exception of Quebec, the electoral map will much remain the same.

Where the Liberals are playing with fire is in Quebec, they made very little gain in the last election and the Gomery report is doing nothing but give ammunition to the separatist movement. Gilles Duceppe is quite possibly the most conniving politician Quebec has seen since Lucien Bouchard. His platform during the last election was "we're not talking about the separation". Hardly believable coming from a party who's sole existence is the separation of Quebec.

Paraskass post is the perfect example of what I mean when I say that Gomery is giving ammo to the separatists.

Chretien has not said his last word. Yes, he's guilty as sin but himself and his army of lawyers will do a stellar job of putting the blame on someone else.

While I tend to agree...I think we'll still have to wait a little longer for the fallout from the Gomery report. A lot will depend on media spin.

At this point I'd wager Martin likely will go back in, but by a VERY slim margin. Definitely a minority gov`t will continue.

That's a distinct possibility as well.

Small consolation though it is, the only optimism I can muster from yet another impending federation election...is my wife makes some good :2 cents: working the polling stations for the evening.

dcortez 11-02-2005 11:54 PM

There is no question that we have been ripped off big time in ways that we would be doing time for years ago,

BUT,

it's the Libs that got caught THIS TIME.

They are ALL the SAME.

With that in mind, I would vote for Liberal crooks ANY day over having the Conservatives bring what's going below the 49th to Canada.

Until now, we have been bragging about how great Canada is compared to Bush-wacked US (visa vi free speech, civil rights, not attacking sovereign nations based on lies, etc).

If we elect the guy with 'the daily haircut' in the Conservatives, be prepared for a Bush-style regime which will include:

- our participation in Missle Defence (Harper promised this)

- our more active participation in IRAQ (Harper supports this)

- our political alignment with current US polices (Harper and Bush are birds of a fundamentalist feather)

- rescind Gay marriage laws (Harper has promised it)

Let's not forget:

- The Conservatives brought us GST

- The Conservatives brought us NAFTA which is screwing small and medium Canadian businesses royally, not to mention that Bush ripping billions (4+ so far) from our softwood (not a porn term) industry by not even respecting the settle dispute agreements we have in place and all the levels of legal resolution in our favour about this.

The Conservative of today are strong Bush supporters!

Yup, the liberals ripped us off big time - get over it!

Whomever is pulling the purse strings will always rip us off.

Do we want a Bush wannabe running Canada?

Don't let Harper fool you.

Not only should you NOT vote for his party, but you MUST get the word out to anyone thinking about voting for him that they should not be blinded by their anger about (just) getting ripped off again by the government.

Do you want to have to wear Icelandic flags when you travel to Europe to be safe (just as so many Americans wear Canadian flags now when they travel abroad)?

We have already jeopardized our national security (according to a recent Canadian intelligence report) and safety levels from threat of terrorist acts by NOT formalizing our opposition to US foreign policy more than (our usual) passive ways.

We don't support the war in IRAQ as a majority and we need for the enemies of Bush to understand that more clearly. Harper will make that impossible and ultimately make us a target as well, as he and his religious extremists/fundamentalists tear down every pillar of Canadian human and civil rights which have taken so many generations to achieve.
