I want to open a coffee shop somewhere. I am not sure where. I also don't know the first thing about coffee but it can't be hard. Sell some shitty pastries and have a bunch of cool machines that make "grumble grumble cshhhhhhhhh" noises and spit out black goodness.

Not to rain on your parade there Brad, but I know people in the coffee business, big people from actual brew houses to people that run multiple locations..

You will not make a couple million dollars in your first months..... Honestly, you could get something started for around $80,000 if you play your cards right and shop around and use some cheap labor for building your storefront crap..

You also better get ready for a pain in your ass with the health department in cali, they are real sticklers when it comes to coffee shops and what kinda rules you gotta follow..

What about employees? You will not be able to work it alone.. no matter how much you think you can after about 2-3 months it will get old and you will suffer a burnout...

My buddy was making about $350-$400 a day off one location inside a gas station, and that is instant foot traffic.. so think about that in terms of money made.. his cost was about .35 per beverage. you can do the math, but once the traffic is built up, it stays pretty steady.. and only goes up more... He does not make alot of cash overall per location, but he has multiple locations..

everytime i go to the nearest 7-11 and i go there couple of times per day for my coffee, there is always a coffee line. between 6-8 in the morning the line is huge. i'm pretty much sure owners do fine.
