Is this worth falling out over?

So I have some friends over last week - I have supplied wine but of course they bring some of there own to be polite.

They sat and drank my $20-30 wine all night and left very happy... no problems.

So tonight I fancy a glass or 2 and open up the stuff they bought with them.... OMG - its vile - it even has a plastic 'cork'.

These guys are very confortable - ones a merchant banker and ones a head teacher at a school with 1000+ students - but they have always been MEGA tight.

Im getting a bit sick of it.... They are nice people otherwise, but I just cant get over this money thing - how do you deal with that?

Is it like BO, where the best thing a friend can do is tell the other person they stink?

Tough call...

Why not reciprocate a few times - make it obvious.

I've known similiar people like that over the years. Most times I overlook it, simply because in all other respects they're usually good people.

I wouldn't make it in to a confrontation. If you're intent on sendin' them a message, do it with a little tact and subtlety.

:2 cents:

if you have an issue then I'd suggest mentioning it to them...

No one should ever bring wine that is less than $25. Those people should be shot like horses, then fed to dogs.

Recork it and offer it back to them the next time they come over

jennym 11-01-2005 10:02 PM

Next time you invite them over for drinks, serve the brand of "wine" they brought with them. If anything is said, then politely say you assumed that's what they liked since it is what they bought.

jizz or piss in it first. You'll feel better

Are you a guy?
Are these friends, like the type of friends you have in high school?

If so just be upfront. They might feel embarrased but assure them that you in no means require that they bring expensive wine, but it would be nice if they can show the same courtsey that you show them

If these friends are female, just quit now

not eveyone has expensive tastes

I prefer grey goose, some of my friends prefer smirnoff. Should I drop them as friends because they prefer a cheaper brand.

If you don't like what they do, just bring your own from now on. Or is it written in a 'friend contract' that they must provide treats/drinks of equal value to what you provide to maintain the friendship?

You cant compare vodka to wine.

Purpose of vodka is to get you drunk, both brands get you to your goal.

Wine is for the taste, you are supposed to spring for the better stuff.

Next time they come over, offer them up some Boone's Farm or some other fine vintage from a cardboard box. Best served in your finest paper cups or paper bag.

Hell I'm a cheap bastard, but when I go to a friend's, I wouldn't take some rotgut swill that's only good for stripping paint or washing automotive parts.

:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Seriously, I think the thing we are loosing track of is that these guys are mean.

Fuck the wine - 3 glasses in and it all tastes like the best vintage anyway.

They have been mean all there lives - they would argue they are saving so they can get up the next rung up the property ladder.....

Im drunk on their cheap wine now - Im gonna phone them and tell them want a bunch of cheapskates they are.

Bring them a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon next time you go to their place.

I think that the best thing to do-just tell them the problem and be done with it. better that than just let it pass and keep it inside until you blow up.

That is the correct way to handle the situation.

subVERSION 11-02-2005 02:09 AM

First of all.. what kind of wine did u supply?

DeniseAWC 11-02-2005 02:58 AM

two stories.

1st, in the UK there was a mens aftershave / deodorant called 'Brut' and it sucked. One year on of our guys was given a 'Brut 33 Christmas Selection Box' by his girlfriends mother, who hates him (This stuff is shit btw). Being PC and correct, he unwrapped it and said thanks very much, took it home and kept it for a year. Last Christmas he re-wrapped it and gave it back to her. Apparently she was really angry when she opened it, asking if it was his idea of a joke and if he was seriously trying to upset / offend her....which is pretty much what he said he thought she was trying to achieve the previous year!

2nd story, one on my neighbours came round with a bottle of Riocha wine as a thank you for something I'd done for their kids. Bottom line is that I hate Riocha, so when I saw the bottle I said the usual 'thanks' but then asked if this was what they enjoyed? Oh yes they said, so I said 'look, no offence but this stuff makes me sick, so rather than bin it, please would you have it back and enjoy it as I don't like it'

No offence taken and no harm done. As for your wealthy friends, erhaps next time you visit them, try treading in Dog Shit before you go in, then make sure you walk it right through every room in their house. When someone asks 'what's that fuckin' smell' you can suggest that perhaps it's the wine?

Just a though! :winkwink:
