Should designs still fit 800*600?

I haven't made a site in quite a while, and now that I am making one again I am wondering if I should still sacrifice space efficiency for the 800*600 folk.

TurboAngel 11-01-2005 01:36 PM

Did you see my pics?

Serge Litehead 11-01-2005 01:38 PM

few month ago i checked sexcounter showed that 20% of all visitors on my site were using 800x600

jimthefiend 11-01-2005 01:40 PM

stats say that most surfers have a 15 or 17 inch monitor and 800X600 res.

Murderous 11-01-2005 01:41 PM

DutchTeenCash 11-01-2005 01:44 PM

xclusive 11-01-2005 01:45 PM

You can go either ways these days but 800x600 is still the safest

Libertine 11-01-2005 01:46 PM

That was what I was fearing... such a waste of screen space :(

SCREEN RESOLUTION
54% 1024x768 54%
28% 800x600 28%
10% 1280x1024 10%
03% 1152x864 03%
01% 640x480 01%
<1% 1600x1200 <1%

ChewbaCreative 11-01-2005 02:04 PM

no! hate it! :)

biskoppen 11-01-2005 02:11 PM

We still make all our designs 800x600

If you choose not to, the area outside the 800 pixels should only be used as room for advertisement .. no navigation links etc etc

amalekite 11-01-2005 02:52 PM

Depends on your site

BUt i think you should set it for 1024

Surfers still using 800-600 are used to scrolling

gornyhuy 11-01-2005 02:53 PM

Who ARE these people that are using 800x600. they are killing me.

Rui 11-01-2005 02:55 PM

Depends on the target and type of site....

xxxice 11-01-2005 02:56 PM

Minte 11-01-2005 02:56 PM

Agreed

I don't make designs for 800x600 any more, If a client comes to me wanting one I'll just decline the project and move on.

:1orglaugh Damn your sig!

pornguy 11-01-2005 03:02 PM

I would always do them in 800x600, and center them and top align. that way in any other res, they dont look so bad.

That's what I'm doing now, but keeping to a width of 770 leaves room only for a single small links/etc. column next to a main text/pics/blog column.

Elli 11-01-2005 03:21 PM

I keep mine narrower, because I always have trillian running down the side of my screen. So I keep my sites 800 wide at most if possible. Make them center themselves and they'll still look decent.

webseth 11-01-2005 03:30 PM

you should fit 800x600 anyway, because if you have 1024x768 or 1600x1200 youre likely not running your browser maximized and guess what, its probably about 800x600 on your desktop

iwantchixx 11-01-2005 03:40 PM

Pesonally I am getting sick of 800x600. Come on, why are TGPs and Link Lists forcing people to use 800x600 for only 20 percent of the population?? It's a waste of fucking space that could be utilized.

Any site I design for my own use or for anything that does not need to be submitted is designed for 1024x768. Time for the internet's 20% to pony up and learn how to set screen resolutions in the display properties.

I hate side-scrolling to view a site. I have a single-monitor setup, so my instant messenger runs down the side of my screen real estate. I have a feeling I'm not alone.

800*600 users that are brokeass bitches with no credit card: 98.4%

LiveDose 11-01-2005 04:14 PM

Either that or they're older people who prefer seeing things well and have plenty of plastic to use. :Graucho

sumphatpimp 11-01-2005 05:18 PM

go to the store and see what is on the shelf, if a surfer can't afford a decent monitor McD's isn't payin him enough to join your site either.

the real reason for 800x600 is the people who reveiw galleries and free sites can't afford any better because the job just don't pay that much, so if you want to get listed don't piss them off and make them fell bad cause they think their job is very important.

and that is the truth.

bdld 11-01-2005 05:29 PM

what irks me is sites that are not centered, while it may look full-screen 800x600 to you, on widescreen it looks aligned left.
