Is this some kind of Virus?

FUCK!
Is this some kind of email Virus?
Ive been getting it for a while, so im positive its some kind of fucking virus.

Its an email to me, from me!
The address of this email says its from me, my own domain!

The message varries from shit like this:
"This is a new game
This game is my first work.
You're the first player.
I wish you would enjoy it. "

Other emails are totally blank, with no content, blank, just a subject heading and a return address from my domain to me.

What the fuck? Does this mean there are other people getting emails from my domain with this shit on it?

I dont get it, there is no exe file attached or anything to click on or download, its just a message, or its a totally blank email!

The only disturbing thing is that the email says its from me with my email address.

boneprone - I don't know how your getting e-mail from your own domain. Maybe someone is playing around with the sendmail on your server.

I get a certain type of e-mail all the time like this:

E-mail addy is always different, it will bounce if I reply & the e-mail contains no text, just an attachment like:
ScienceReport-Essay.pif

The .pif file is always named something different, but often contains "Essay" or "Report" in the name. I got at least 50 of those e-mails over the last 3 months. I'm 100% sure I'm not on some mailing list because sometimes I get 12 a day, then go weeks with it.

dank 03-13-2002 11:13 AM

i get them also.

But they are blank!
Nothing, no text or exe file.
also from boneprone domain.

=^..^= 03-13-2002 05:46 PM

I get a a lot of blank emails too

They concern me - but not as much as crabs

I'm not really a tech head - so maybe someone can explain it to me :

Trojans - do they come as attachments in emails or can it just be that someone send you an email that appears blank but i actually a trojan?

Forgive my stupidity
I make up for it with my hot ass :1orglaugh

If you get blank emails using Outlook then you may have a compatibility problem. Visit the Windows support site for your fix.

Juge 03-13-2002 08:25 PM

Boneprone, it's a virus all right. One of those that emails everyone on your contact list.

BUT, since you got it from yourself, do you have a virus???

Not necessarily, I got one of them from myself, as well. I have fully checked out my system, and I do not have any viruses on it. If this status changes because my software isn't up to date for this particular virus, I'll let you know.

So why did you get it from yourself?

You didn't - the thing just messed with the header info of the email, and by doing that, it could make it appear to come from Bill Gates, or anyone you wish. I remember back in the day when I first got into Unix, I seen a 'blackmail' program that could email anyone from anyone. Cool, huh? For the record, I didn't pull any shit.

It's really the same thing as messing with the headers to show an attachment is a .wav when it's really a .exe. Most email programs are smart enough to show the ACTUAL filename of the attachment, so that you can see that it really is NOT a .wav, and you'll ve fucked if you run that .exe....

hope this helps...

anyone else willing to shed some light on this?

From my experience, I must agree. I really do NOT recommend McAfee... I got a virus once from their own database update program. The virus was known to exist for several days before I went to update - I assumed that they had enough time to have an update available for it. Guess what? They didn't. Their update software was infected BY the virus... I have to ask - if they knew the virus existed, and did not have a check/fix for it, then they should have assumed that they just may have the virus themselves, and should have shut down all their download software - i mean, it was all over the news - everyone knew about it. The guys just weren't thinking... I wonder how many people got infected from them, and didnt even know about it... (incidentally, i knew about it because i isntalled norton after finding the virus and stopping in manually [wasnt too hard], and then ran mcafee's update with norton running - norton stop 'er cold).

cheers,

Gemini 03-15-2002 06:14 AM

Some greenies to the virus crowd also use the virus text in white on a white html background thinking it will infect by opening the emails... :winkwink:

Luckily it doesn't work. ;)
